How do I describe this book? Cunning, ruthless, machiavellian, amoral and instructive.
More engrossing on one’s sixth read-through. The principles and precepts in Greene’s book, based on historical examples, are still pertinent today as they ever were. Case in point, the title of a recent AFR article, “Power”. Power is an excellent servant, but a terrible master. It has been the sole cause behind many of the most prolific rises and falls in our history.
Cheekily known as a "TikTok" made me buy it title, Greene's 48 Laws are illustrated through the tactics, triumphs and failures of histories great figures from the past and present who have adeptly wielded or fallen victim to - power.
The perfect book for the power hungry, and let's be honest, nobody wants less power, everyone want more, right? ;) The laws contained are based on that of the old aristocratic court where everyone accretes around the person of influence (Like the King or Queen). And one must tactfully plot, scheme and foil the plans of other courtiers to your own ends. Many think that the court drama is something that has been lost to the annals of history, but it is very much alive. At work, in relationships, on the street or on your social media feed; the 48 laws of power apply everywhere.
For anyone with an interest in self-defence, wealth, power, conquest or simply being a better player of the game of life (even a more educated spectator) The 48 Laws of Power is one of the most entertaining and useful books I've ever devoured. Multiple times in fact.
One of the very first laws that I resonated with is "Never outshine the Master" and this has been something I've made the mistake of doing in some of my roles in my career and despite doing an excellent job, I never understood why my boss was always displeased (until now).

Very tongue in cheek of course, but this book will 'teach' you how to dissemble, cheat, feign, fight and advance your own cause in the realms of business and everyday life.
Ironic, wry and clever, for my fellow book fanatics, this is a witty and indispensible guide to power.
The 48 laws in this book will either elevate you to be a better person or descend one to a master in the art of manipulation — choose wisely.
