BOOK REPORT: Close Your Mouth by Patrick MeKeown

As my practice evolves, I have learned that 75% of people with orofacial pain and TMJ dysfunction also have a sleep disordered breathing issue. In fact, the primary issue may be the breathing issue. So I have been spending an increasing amount of my time learning about diagnosing and treating these issues.

Many of our breathing issues are due to underdeveloped upper jaws, nasal airway blockage, pharyngeal (throat) airway narrowing and blockage and more. However, some of the solutions to resolving this is in complete control of our patients including diet, alcohol consumption, exercise, weight, and more.

And along came a Russian Physician, Dr. Konstantin Buteyko, who created a breathing system that resolved the majority of Asthma cases without drugs and medications. These same breathing issues will also help treat sleep disordered breathing for many people as well.

Patrick McKeown has compiled these exercises and Buteyko breathing techniques in a simple handbook that is easy to read, and techniques that are easy to implement. There is no magic bullet here. There is no simple 'pill' that corrects everything. The solution requires effort on the part of the patient but it is effective and the treatment is free.

I highly recommend that anyone and everyone purchase a copy of this book and be familiar with its contents. It can change your life, or the life of someone you know.
