This year seems to have been the year of the book!
If you are planning to pitch it to a house or agency, you need to write a book proposal. I love the book proposal process.
And here's why...
The book proposal process creates the ultimate mirror for your project.
It helps you with your WHO, WHAT HOW & WHY. Check out all 4 of these pieces below.
?? WHO. You HAVE to know your marketplace inside and out before you start your book. The book proposal helps keep you aligned with your audience. You have to know this piece of the puzzle to ensure your book will sell regardless of how you decide to publish. If you want to pitch your book to a house, your audience is super important as the house may or may not be interested or specialized in your audience.
?? WHAT. Being able to clearly define your book is one of the most important pieces and your proposal puts this front and center. The entire proposal is really your elevator pitch. Telling people about your book will happen every day regardless of how you decide to publish. Think about what happens at networking events.
?? HOW. When your book is published, you need to sell it. The whole purpose of writing a book is to have it read by someone! HOW are you going to sell it? The book proposal makes you create a marketing plan! It's actually really helpful - and AGAIN - it's helpful regardless of how you decide to publish it. Houses and agents want to partner with you and so they want to know you have a plan before they pick you up as a client.
?? WHY. This goes backto your audience. Let's say you are at the starting stages of your book journey. You're standing in the aisle that you want your book to be sold in. There are about five or six other books that sound just like yours. This is where the WHY comes in. Why is your book different than all the other books out there? The book proposal is makes you define this.
The bottom line in all of this is you don't have to do it alone.
