Here is today's Book Marketing Minute #15:
Readers love connecting with authors, and I always think it's cool when a reader takes time to write. Sometimes they just say something nice, sometimes they ask a question. I have an email folder: "Book Love" and I keep all of the nice emails from readers. I file them right after I take a few minutes to respond.?
Remember when I said the best book marketing is through personal recommendation? When you communicate directly with a reader, the chances of them talking about you and your book exponentially multiply. I mean, have you ever had an encounter (read: met them, had dinner with them, saw them from a distance) with a famous person?
I have! I used to see JFK, Jr. rollerblading in Central Park when I lived in NYC. Same timeframe, I saw Madonna running with Carlos Leone (for the uninitiated, that's her daughter's daddy). A couple of years later, I got to have dinner with Tony & Becky Robbins and friends. I didn't meet John, Jr., Madonna or Carlos but I remember seeing them. (So cool!) I have a photo of me with Tony somewhere in a box. I remember him being huge and also kind, smart, and funny. Guess what? Those events were all almost 30 years ago! I'm sure you have similar tales ... and in the scenario I'm describing, you are the person someone might be talking about 30 years from now.
So, take three minutes and craft a kind response. You'll probably make someone's day, all while you're doing some pretty awesome book marketing.
Note: sometimes people feel the need to be critical, rude, or downright mean. No response is necessary for these emails, but if you do respond, always be kind.
