?I have a confession to make.

It’s one that doesn’t require entry into a curtained broom-cupboard in any cold Catholic Church (or one of any other denomination).

It doesn’t require you to bare your soul (or anyone else’s).

And it doesn’t need the forgiveness of a priest, or vicar (single or married) who speaks with all the authority of the Vatican, The Church of England (or another religious organisation).

It’s more a confession of a literary kind.

And you don’t need to be kneeling down, or standing up anywhere, to make it.

It has nothing to do with prayers, hymns, Hail Marys or Our Fathers.

And everything to do with blood, death, crime and murder.

Everything to do with retribution, punishment, good and evil.

The event that ultimately led to my confession took place in 1841.

A bit before my time.

It was the year that the first ever book of crime fiction was published.

It was called The Murders in the Rue Morgue, and it was written by Edgar Allen Poe.

You’ve no doubt heard of him.

Now…to my confession.

I haven’t read it.

Not a word.

Of course, I realise that not even casting a sneaky peek over the story that gave birth to the crime genre is quite an admission of guilt.

There may even be a cardinal sin involved somewhere.

However, there may also be an atonement involved somewhere else.

Even if it took until 1929 to show its face.

Its name?

Red Harvest, by Dashiell Hammett.

It was, by all accounts, the first hard-boiled detective novel published in the 20th century.

And it paved the way for a million other crime novels.

Including my own debut crime novel…A Time for Dying.

About to be published on November 23.

That’s the good news.

Now, I wouldn’t be so bold (or so infinitely stupid) as to mention A Time for Dying in the same breath as either novel.

But I will say this...

If you’d like to cast your peepers over a procedural that’s a million miles away from the kind of crime novel you usually read, you can pre-order it right here, right now.

That’s the great news…
