A Book About Hydraulic Safety - The Time Has Come!

A Book About Hydraulic Safety - The Time Has Come!

Almost a decade ago I initiated the "Take 5 and Stay Alive" program. I called the program "Take 5 and Stay Alive" for a number of reasons:

? When I do safety training I coach my students to take 5-minutes before doing a task - whether it's at home or at work - to clear their minds and think about what they need to do to perform the task safely. I urge them to ask themselves a number of questions: "Do I have the proper training?" "Do I have the appropriate PPE?" Do I have the right tools?" "Is the work area safe?"

? I have investigated numerous incidents that caused a worker(s) to suffer severe injuries or death. In most cases, if the victim(s) had received 5-minutes of training the outcome would have been very different.

? I write each safety topic in such a manner that it takes no more than 5-minutes to present a given topic, which makes them ideal for pre-work safety training.

When I launched the program a decade ago we made hats, coffee mugs, T-shirts and banners to get people excited about investing 5-minutes of their time to "stay alive."

I have spent almost three decades teaching hydraulic safety. My workshops have always focused on teaching mechanics how to work safely with hydraulics and teaching engineers how to design safe hydraulic systems. I have written numerous books and manuals. Moreover, I have participated in numerous incident investigations.

Accordingly, I have snippets of vital and helpful safety information spread throughout the more than 35 books and training manuals I have written - besides what's sitting between my ears!

During the past two decades, a number of students have asked me why I don't consolidate all the snippets of safety into a single book dedicated solely to hydraulic safety.

I am pleased to say that a few months ago I decided to do just that. I am writing an extremely comprehensive book dedicated entirely to hydraulic safety. And believe me, it's going to be comprehensive. It will have safety topics aimed at technicians, engineers, safety professionals, supervisors and managers, and teachers.

I am offering with the book, an optional flash drive that will have dozens of "download and deliver" 5-minute safety presentations. Each presentation will feature a different hydraulic safety topic. Each topic will have license-free handouts and quizzes. Print as many as you want at no extra charge.

As with all the books I write, they are self-published. The first print will consist of 1000 copies. I am offering the book at a pre-print price of US$175.00 each. Add the flash drive loaded with dozens of license-free, ready to deliver, safety presentations for an additional US$100.00.

Overview:

A valuable and comprehensive safety reference for any organization working with or around hydraulics. This comprehensive guide informs working professionals in multiple industries, such as manufacturing, construction, mining, forestry, AWP, utility, elevator, etc., about safety procedures that should be employed on the job. It informs the reader about the hazards in the workplace and what to do to make sure he/she is protected.

The Handbook of Hydraulic Safety Practices presents readers with the proper organizational skills needed to avoid injuries, details prudent design practices, and discusses how to ensure that adequate protection is used on the job. The author covers not only obvious hydraulic safety considerations, such as maintenance and reliability, but everything related to hydraulic safety, such as lockout and tagout, hydraulic system design, component testing, and training. This reference book provides the most comprehensive coverage for any company to keep employees informed and to keep their work environment safe.

The Handbook of Hydraulic Safety Practices:

  • Contains blueprints and templates for evaluating safety procedures and conditions in the plant.
  • Includes blueprints and models for conducting safety audits on stationary and mobile hydraulic systems.
  • Covers common hazards and how to avoid them, such as lockout and tagout, controlling the release of stored energy post-shutdown, non-invasive maintenance and testing, etc.
  • Goes beyond regulations and laws to provide a blueprint for creating a safe workplace.
  • Teaches safety personnel and instructors about a given safety topic and prepares them to provide a "Take 5 and Stay Alive" safety presentation on a given topic.
  • Includes blueprints for vital component adjustment and test procedures that technical writers can "cut and paste" into their company's service and repair manuals.
  • Covers the necessary safety training needs of unqualified employees.
  • Serves as refresher training for qualified employees.
  • Extensive coverage of lockout and tagout as it relates to hydraulic systems.
  • Helps safety supervisors and managers identify and mitigate potential hazards.
  • Includes templates for safety specifications that are vital when purchasing machinery and equipment.
  • Includes audit templates for outside contractors.
  • What to do in case of a hydraulic incident.
  • Helps workers identify "near miss" events.
  • Helps engineers make safety the nucleus of hydraulic system design.
  • Helps engineers avoid design pitfalls.
  • Helps companies substantially reduce liability.
  • Includes competency tests for technicians and new hires.

Here's an overview of one of the dozens of topics covered in the book - "Safety with Hydro-Pneumatic Accumulators."

  1. What is a hydro-pneumatic accumulator?
  2. Why are hydro-pneumatic accumulators needed in a hydraulic system?
  3. How can I recognize a hydro-pneumatic accumulator?
  4. Why is it necessary to use compressed nitrogen in an accumulator rather than compressed air or oxygen?
  5. What tools are needed to charge and discharge hydro-pneumatic accumulators?
  6. What PPE do I need when charging and discharging a hydro-pneumatic accumulator?
  7. What training do I need to service and repair hydro-pneumatic accumulators?
  8. What types of hazards can hydro-pneumatic accumulators cause?
  9. Best safety practices for charging and discharging hydro-pneumatic accumulators.
  10. Additional safety factors related to hydro-pneumatic accumulators.
  11. Best safety practices for designing with hydro-pneumatic accumulators.
  12. Best safety practices for repairing hydro-pneumatic accumulators.
  13. What are symptoms of non-functioning hydro-pneumatic accumulators?
  14. What kind of hazards can non-functioning hydro-pneumatic accumulators cause?

Estimated completion date is May 31, 2019

I am going to discuss snippets of the book as the project moves forward. You are also welcome to ask questions about the book's content.? Since the book is aimed at engineers, maintenance techs, safety personnel, technical writers, instructors, insurance agents, etc., I decided to make it as user friendly as possible. Accordingly, safety recommendations and advice for each discipline will be listed within color coded "boxes." For example, safety recommendations and advice for engineers will be in purple boxes. Whereas safety recommendations and advice for safety personnel will be in orange boxes. And so on.? Also, through the years I have developed my own set of safety "standards" related to hydraulic systems. These "standards" will be in "boxes" titled "suggested standard." Finally, each safety topic will feature one or more case histories. My collection of case histories date back to the early 80's when I started studying how and why hydraulic incidents occur. The book is going to be extremely comprehensive.?
