Binding plays a key role in the appearance and performance of a printed publication. Selecting the best type of binding for a specific print project requires taking into account several factors, such as the function of the publication, the number of pages, the desired quality of presentation, and your printing budget. We have three different types of printers for all kinds of printing requirements and the best binders to professionally assemble your various publications. There are several different binding options. Below I will briefly discuss four of the most common options. Whatever you choose, Bass Printing can provide you with that professional look and feel you need with the best quality, fastest turnaround time, and the best price.
Perfect Binding: Perfect binding is one of the easiest and fastest methods of binding books. Perfect binding used adhesives to hold individual book pages together. A hot melt or PUR adhesive is placed on the book spine, producing a flat spine. Perfect binding is commonly used in binding of manuals, soft cover novels, magazines, etc. The spine must a minimum thickness of 1/8 inch (~30-page minimum). Therefore, products with few pages and low paper weights are generally not eligible for this type of binding.
Saddle Stitch Binding: Saddle stitching, also called stapled binding, is a very popular and easy binding method in which pages are folded, scored/creased, and stapled together. It is often used for books, booklets, magazines, newsletters, menus, brochures, and catalogues. Usually, the staple wire is punched through the spine from the outside in two places and is bent flat on the inside. After it has been bound, the document is folded then trimmed on three sides. This binding method is both economical and fast. Moreover, it is highly durable, and the pages open completely flat so that printed content is not lost in the gutter (the center of the printed product when opened). Saddle stitch binding only works with page counts that are multiples of four. Individual pages are not possible. Fold-in pages on the cover or inside pages are the only exception. The number of pages is typically 8 – 64 pages ideally.
Wire-O BINDING: This well-liked binding option delivers a stylish, professional-looking metal finish with the use of a continuous hinge of double-wire loops that hold the front and back covers and pages intact. Books with wire-o binding lie perfectly flat and can be opened back-to-back to put your work on full display. This method is ideal for documents that are from 1/8 inch to 1 inch thick (200-page maximum).
Case Binding: Case binding is the most common type of hardcover binding for books. The pages are made into a book block either by section sewing or perfect binding before the book block is attached to the cover. Case binding involves creating a bookcase (book cover) for the book and casing the book block into the case. A case (cover) is made up of chipboard covered with leather, vinyl, paper, etc. Case binding is used for binding diaries, hardcover books like law books, thesis, novels, etc. Ideal page count is 30 – 400 pages per book.
