Boo!! I think I saw a Ghost!

Boo!! I think I saw a Ghost!

In anticipation of a scary and fun Halloween, let’s take the time to discuss those flying goulish ghosts!? No, not your typical ghosts that scare children at nighttime, but rather the concept of employer ghosting in the work place.? This practice not only erodes trust and goodwill but has a host of negative effects that ripple through the professional landscape. It's high time we acknowledge this issue and take action to correct it.

Ghosting, which is a term commonly used in the recruitment process, takes place inside companies far too frequently.? When employers, leaders, and managers vanish or go dark, it erodes the trust that employees place in their organization. Trust is the foundation of a healthy workplace!

Ghosting creates a sense of abandonment and can lead to decreased morale among the workforce. This, in turn, can impact productivity and overall job satisfaction.? A loss of valuable talent is a significant cost for any organization.

What can we do, as leaders to combat this unnecessary and unfortunate trend?? Here’s a comprehensive list below.? And please, make no mistake that we as leaders will fail - but if we keep these concepts in focus, we’ll always come out ahead!

  • As a leader or manager, set the standard by exemplifying respectful and radically transparent communication. Your behavior sets the tone for the entire organization.
  • Maintain open & transparent, timely and honest communication with employees. Let them know what's happening, whether it's about their job status, project updates, or any changes in the organization, even if it's not the news they were hoping for.? Radical truthfulness and Radical transparency should be the ONLY way forward in any organization.
  • Invest in the growth and development of your employees. Offer opportunities for training, learning, and career advancement, and support their aspirations.
  • Define expectations, roles, and responsibilities clearly. This helps employees understand their objectives and the standards they're expected to meet.
  • Provide feedback to employees when they don't make the cut, or fell short of the task at hand. It helps them understand areas for improvement and provides a sense of closure.? Feedback is the key to improving employee productivity & morale!
  • Foster a culture of respect and empathy in the workplace. Encourage courteous and professional interactions at all levels of the organization.
  • Recognize and appreciate the contributions of your employees. Acknowledging their efforts and achievements boosts morale and job satisfaction.
  • When issues arise in the workplace, tackle them promptly. Ignoring problems can lead to resentment and disengagement.
  • In the hiring process, communicate openly with candidates about their status. Even if they are not selected, providing feedback can be valuable for their professional growth.
  • Encourage employees to provide feedback on their experiences and suggest improvements. Act on their feedback to create a more inclusive and respectful workplace.

As leaders and professionals, it's our responsibility to set the standard for respectful workplace behavior. Let's collectively make a change. Let's prioritize open, respectful, and radically transparent communication, whether in hiring, firing, or everyday interactions. Let's put an end to ghosting in the workplace and should have no place in our professional world.

Share your thoughts and let's keep the conversation going!
