Bolt Applications

Bolt Applications

Below we have some example applications utilizing the four different bolt types: Standard Explosive Bolts, Ridge Cut Bolts, Separation Bolts - Piston Actuated, and Hydrodynamic Bolts.

The loads shown are the proof load requirements and the design margins are typically 1.25x to 2x.

Standard Explosive Bolts

Helicopter emergency release using a single bolt with a dual bridgewire initiator.

The submunition below uses five single bridgewire initiated bolts and redundancy was not required in this case. One bolt releases the parachute from the top canister and one each to release the four projectile skeets on the sides.

Ridge Cut Bolts

In these two examples, ridge cut design was used in a Marman clamp (similar to a V-Band) to restrain and then to release a missile prior to launch.

A four-bolt system that is used for stage separation. Redundant initiators, in this case, into a transfer block which are used to ignite the transfer lines that go out to the four bolts.

Separation Bolts - Piston Actuated

One piston actuated bolt releases the spacecraft from the upper stage.

And another, a 3-bolt system used to release the flight recorder.

Hydrodynamic Bolts

These hydrodynamic bolts released the Solid Rocket Boosters from the shuttle and will be releasing them from the NASA SLS. Note the proof load strength of these bolts.

In designing new systems, typically the first question we are asked in, "What size bolts do you have?"

Although we have many sizes of bolts, each bolt is designed for a specific application and tested to their unique shock, vibration, and temperature conditions. So, each bolt design must be reviewed and tailored against its intended applications.
