The Bold Type with Dan Butterly: August 5, 2024

Good morning to all!??

Late last week I was at CSUN as we were filming The Big West Academic Honors show. Then, I went to Long Beach to speak to the Western Four Women’s Volleyball Officiating Consortium. The requested topic of the speech? The changes that have occurred within the NCAA over the past year.?It was a challenge to discuss it all within 30 minutes, but I did my best to script a great speech.??

With the announcement on Friday that Aerosmith will no longer be touring due to health reasons (LINK), the song of the week comes from Aerosmith.? The choice is dedicated to this amazing band, but also to the impact they have had on motivating the sports world – "Dream On".?

With those amazing sport moments in the video as a motivator, and a reminder as to why we love sports, let’s get to The Bold Type!

NCAA TRANSFORMATION REQUIREMENTS EFFECTIVE AUG. 1, 2024? ?

Per Jenn Fraser, Vice President of NCAA Division I:?Several initiatives for Division I college athletes took effect on August 1, 2024. These include a new name, image and likeness resource center; expanded health care coverage; increased mental health support; and academic guarantees after a series of rules changes adopted by the NCAA Board of Governors and Division I members. To keep up on the latest updates and benefits to the NCAA’s schools, conferences and student-athletes,?the NCAA posted a comprehensive story to ncaa.org, that include: ??Student-Athlete Core GuaranteesDivision I schools are now required to provide the following services for its student-athletes:

  • Academic services, career counseling and life skills training.
  • Health care and medical services.
  • Scholarship protections.
  • Degree completion program.

Formerly known as the student-athlete holistic model,?Student-Athlete Core Guarantees?enhance student-athlete benefits and services, expand scholarship protections and increase expectations of Division I schools.NCAA NIL AssistIn partnership with Teamworks,?NCAA NIL Assist?will allow for Division I schools to provide disclosures of NIL activities while providing education and insights into the NIL environment. The service does the following:

  • Collects disclosures of NIL activities.
  • Provides educational materials to all NIL stakeholders.?
  • Creates a voluntary registry for agents and other professional service providers.
  • Empowers student-athletes to search for credible services and rate their experiences.

New Division I rules encourage student-athletes to disclose NIL agreements that provide income of at least $600. That information will be aggregated in a deidentified database.Post-Eligibility Insurance ProgramFor up to two years after student-athletes separate from school or voluntarily withdraw from athletics, the Post-Eligibility Insurance Program covers excess accident medical expenses for athletically related injuries sustained during participation in an NCAA qualifying intercollegiate sport.?The program provides excess insurance coverage for properly documented covered injuries that occur on or after Aug. 1, 2024 and is available to all of the NCAA’s student-athletes in each division. The coverage provides benefits in excess of any other valid and collectible insurance. The policy has a $90,000 excess limit per injury, with no deductible, and up to $25,000 is available for mental health services related to an eligible, documented athletic injury.?
