The Bold and the Recruitable: Secrets to Success in HR

The Bold and the Recruitable: Secrets to Success in HR

Organizations are pulling out all the stops to keep up in the digital age. Employee morale, retention, and effective learning have never been more critical. The focus can no longer be on recruiting the best workers but on finding ways to keep them.?

This week, DevSkiller TalentTech Weekly tackles the industry’s growing trends.?

Lean Tools for an Efficient Workplace

Lean principles are based on the idea of continuous improvement in the workplace. Focusing on eliminating waste, reducing costs, and improving efficiency.?

As Spiceworks News & Insights described in their recent article on the subject, “is to create a culture of continuous improvement by encouraging employees to identify areas where they can improve and providing them with the tools and resources to do so.”

Similar to DevSkiller’s principles on the importance of talent management through skills in improvement in the workplace, the article focuses on implementing into the tech sector techniques like Kaizen, a Japanese term meaning “continuous improvement.”

Identifying areas for improvement

It is proven that investing in the development of your employees is a great way to retain them.?

As Tiny Pulse recently stated, “Employees who feel they’re progressing in their careers are 20% more likely to still be working at their companies in one year’s time.”

The trick is to identify areas your employees can improve in and quickly put into place the foundations for effective learning and development in those areas. The hope is to create a culture of learning within your organization. One where your employees take an active role in their development and want to progress of their own accord.?

“You can reinvigorate your workforce by providing employees with the skills and training they need to succeed by investing in employee development programs that provide technical and soft skills training.

Utilizing AI in the workplace

AI can be utilized to make the workplace more efficient. In particular, when it comes to ‘Design Thinking’.? Spice Works’ article mentions the benefits of automation in tech by identifying areas in which AI can improve efficiency by reducing the workload of humans.?

At DevSkiller, for instance, we use automation in TalentScore , to evaluate the technical skills of developers—freeing up the time of technical engineers. However, there are many ways AI can be utilized effectively to aid organizations, not just in the tech sector but in HR, marketing, and fields across the board.

Overcoming challenges

Of course, any new way of working brings change, often leading to workplace friction. However, as Spice Works points out, challenges can be easily overcome by properly managing any situation. The article recommends overcoming resistance to change by “investing in training and education, developing a consistent approach, and managing expectations.”

If tech companies can successfully do this, lean management systems can become the norm in many organizations, and companies can reap the rewards of increased productivity.?

Bold Recruitment for Improved Hiring

In its recent article, ‘Bolder recruitment efforts can benefit organizations,’ 麦肯锡 stated the importance of employees making bold decisions when it comes to making themselves more hirable in the future. The idea is that those who accept challenges head-on, learn to be agile and adapt, and use change as a springboard for learning new skills will succeed in the future.?

“Those who take new roles involving bigger changes or challenges tend to overcome a higher skill distance and receive larger rewards.”

By closing what McKinsey calls their ‘skill distance,’ the best employees are those who can bridge the gaps between what they already know and what they need to know as time goes on.?

Regarding organizations, McKinsey recommends that recruiters also be bold in their choices. The article mentions some organizations' success in focusing on talent that is usually less represented, including in hiring refugees.??

“Organizations that see the best results are often courageous in their recruitment approach. They are willing to take risks and invest in employee integration and development.”?

Whether it be recruiters or talent, one ever-present is the focus on skills as the primary motivator for success. More than ever, skills are replacing traditional job roles, and experience is giving way to the possession of practical skills.?

Jobs Are Out, Skills Are In

InformationWeek continued discussing the ‘rise of skills’ in a recent article on the matter.?

The digital magazine talks about the “Decline of the job-centric model” and puts this down to the fact that “today’s workers are increasingly engaged in tasks beyond their prescribed job descriptions.”

For InformationWeek, modern working practices focus on skills over roles, allowing workers to easily transition into contributing to projects outside their usual scope.?

“81% of business executives reported that work is performed across functional boundaries.”?

The skills-centric model is here to stay. More and more organizations across various sectors are implementing this more agile approach regarding training and recruitment. With benefits that run deeper than many might realize. For instance, when it comes to bias in the workplace.?

80% of business executives say making decisions about hiring, pay, promotions, succession, and deployment based on people’s skills rather than their job history would reduce bias and improve fairness.?

The skills-based work model is close to the heart of DevSkiller, with our advanced skills management platform focused on defining, measuring, and managing employees' skills across entire organizations.?

Our latest white paper on the subject discusses the intricacies of the skills-based model and the benefits you can expect from adopting it.
