A few days ago, my younger sister Bolanle was sacked from her well-paying job. weti cuz am "WhatsApp Status".
In today's Nigeria, any job paying =N=350,000 monthly net or more is considered a good one. But my younger sister "the secretary general of Gen-Z " believes that you can entirely separate your personal and professional lives.
While it's important to maintain a degree of separation between personal and professional life, complete separation can be challenging, especially in the age of social media where personal lives can easily spill over into professional domains.
Remember, achieving complete separation between personal and professional life is not always realistic or desirable. It's important to find a balance that works for you while being mindful of how your actions and presence on social media can impact your professional image and relationships.
Back to the Koko, What Happen?
Bolanle works as a tutor in one of Lekki's high-end schools, teaching Grade A and above. She is very skilled at her job, but she is also an outgoing person. Her WhatsApp status is frequently filled with photographs of her buddies, whether they are in the club, bikini pools, dining, drinking, or eating delicacies, and she is constantly snap chatting.
In a recent PTA meeting, three female parents of Bolanle's students reported to the school that Bolanle was seducing their Husbands, that their spouse had saved Bolanle's pictures on their phone, and that one of them had cut her husband, masturbating to one of Bolanle's bikini photos.?As a result, they will either withdraw their children from the school or Bola has to be dismissed.
Just so you know the total school fees for these 3 students is approximately 4.3M. The irony is that Bolanle has never had any serious conversation with these men or women, But they had her phone number since she was their children's class teacher.?

And so Bola was fired.
Dear Gen Z, your secretary-general is at home right now. but I hope you learn. Employers may consider the potential reputational impact of an employee's behavior on social media, especially if it is connected to the company or if it contradicts the organization's values. However, the decision to terminate an employee based on reputation concerns can still be subject to legal scrutiny, especially if it infringes on protected rights or is deemed arbitrary or unfair.
The legality of an employer firing an employee based on their personal life and social media activity can vary depending on the jurisdiction and specific circumstances. In general, private employers have more discretion in making employment decisions compared to public sector employers, but there are still legal limitations and potential risks involved.
