How tech intensifies burnout and how psychological flexibility can help
Australian workers were the most burnt out of those surveyed in 2022 by Microsoft Work Trend's Index. 62% of those surveyed said that they felt burnt out by their work during the preceding 12 months.
Burnout is often discussed which is positive, however the danger is that it becomes normalised and begins to be seen as just a feature of modern life.
Burnout has been studied since the 1970's and the research is starting to show that it is our digital technology (Slack, Teams, Salesforce) that is the KEY factor in driving burnout in the workplace. This research also states that burnout is caused by organisations and as such requires an organisational response.
Often the onus of responsibility for managing the serious symptoms of burnout are placed back on the individual, exacerbating the mental health issues caused by that individuals work environment.
What is required according to this research is a leader-focused approach to managing this issue, so that individuals and teams can more flexibly deal with the realities of the work world.
Tackling this issue as leaders and then as teams increases social support and reduces isolation, one of the key factors in burnout. This article explores how the concept of "Psychological Flexibility" can be built into leadership and team development to alleviate some of the symptoms of burnout.?
