Boeing 767 Engine Fire / South Korea In-Flight Rules on Batteries / EASA Warns of Fraudulent SAF and Safety Risks

Boeing 767 Engine Fire After Bird Strike in Newark

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has opened an investigation into a FedEx Boeing 767-3S2F engine fire that occurred shortly after takeoff from Newark Liberty International Airport, New Jersey, USA, on March 1, 2025. The aircraft, operating as Flight 3609 to Indianapolis, suffered a right engine fire due to a bird strike and executed an emergency landing at 8:07 a.m., nine minutes after departure, with the fire extinguished upon landing by the Port Authority Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighter Unit. No injuries were reported, the aircraft was later cleared for departure, and air traffic at Newark briefly halted but quickly resumed normal operations. South Korea Implements Stricter In-Flight Rules on Batteries

South Korea has tightened regulations on carrying lithium-ion power banks and e-cigarettes aboard aircraft, prohibiting storage in checked luggage and overhead bins while requiring passengers to keep them on their person or in seat pockets. Effective March 1, the revised rules follow a January fire incident aboard an Air Busan flight, though the cause remains unconfirmed, and impose new restrictions, including a five-unit limit for batteries under 100Wh and mandatory insulation for those between 100Wh and 160Wh. Charging power banks in-flight is now banned, and security personnel have been authorized to inspect and confiscate unauthorized items. Click image above for reading the related details!

EASA Warns of Fraudulent SAF and Safety Risks

Since January 1, 2025, the EU has mandated a minimum blending requirement of two percent Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), set to increase to 70 percent by 2050, but the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) warns of fraudulent activities in this market. In a recent bulletin, EASA highlights that high SAF prices and complex production processes could attract organized crime, increasing the risk of substandard fuel that may compromise aircraft operational safety. The agency calls for stringent quality controls throughout the supply chain and enhanced audits, particularly for new suppliers. Click image above for reading the related post!

SARPcheck global aviation safety audit: A wet lease, codeshare, ACMI Booster

SARPcheck is a new global aviation safety audit that assesses airline compliance with select ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) across defined ICAO Annexes. The primary aim of this audit is to enhance global flight safety while providing an affordable and accessible tool to facilitate ACMI, wet lease, and codeshare operations. The ICAO Annexes and SARPs that SARPcheck focuses on are specifically those outlined by regulatory and industry standards, including FAA requirements for overseeing foreign air carriers and the TCO approval elements of EASA.

SARPcheck is governed by a London-based not-for-profit organization, the Safety Audit Review Partnership (SARP Ltd.), which accredits Safety Quality Organizations (SQOs) such as AEROTHRIVE to conduct these audits globally. Detailed information about the program, including the SARPcheck Program Manual (SCPM), informative brochures, and the latest updates, is available on our website at https://aerothrive.com/audits/sarpcheck-audits/. For further inquiries or personal assistance, please feel free to send me a message. I'm always happy to help! Lufthansa City Airlines is the global launch customer of SARPcheck.
