Body language tip - open palms

The showing of open palms is subconsciously picked up as a sign of honesty. It is thought that this is an inherited belief based on when you showed your open palms to prove you weren’t hiding any weapons. While this isn’t the case these days, nevertheless if you adopt a pose with open palms it will make you appear more approachable.

It is fascinating how we subconsciously pick up these signals and whilst politicians are often taught how to hold themselves and what body language to use, it seems that many great communicators just do it naturally. They don’t really think about what they are doing, they just do it. Even more intriguing is the way your own body language can work on your subconscious. It is very difficult to adopt the open palm pose and have the rest of the body exhibiting negative body language. The very act of standing with your palms upwards and open means that you stand with feet apart, relaxed, shoulders back - a strong, confident posture that in turn makes you more confident and assured - its a win, win situation!
