SALT’s seven reasons why boating is good for you

Boating is not only a great recreational activity but also a source of numerous mental and emotional benefits. The positive effects of boating are fully understood by one maritime youth charity, UKSA - United Kingdom Sailing Academy - Cowes, Isle of Wight, who demonstrate the transformative power of providing water-based adventures for children and young people. Through their inspirational programmes and funding support, they enable access to life-changing marine experiences that enhance life skills and build resilience, confidence and teamwork in the younger generation.

As a boat owner, the opportunity to engage in an activity that is easy, sociable and fun is consistently a big draw and it is clear that spending time on the water, whether the sea, lake or river, has a comprehensive inventory of advantages.?

  1. Water has a calming effect on our senses and so contributes to a feeling of peace - a great stressbuster. The sounds of the waves, the soothing hues of blue and the rhythmic motion can generate a state of relaxation, helping to reduce stress and anxiety. Being near water allows us to disconnect from the demands and pressures of daily life and soak up a sense of tranquillity. Equally time out boating promotes an undisturbed space for mindfulness, reflection and mental clarity.?
  2. Boating activities lend themselves to socialising and connecting with others. Whether you're enjoying a trip out with friends, participating in water sports with a team or simply relaxing with family, the social aspect of being on the water can be a nice mood-booster by bringing a sense of belonging with positive interactions. Creating memories and strengthening bonds whilst sharing a fun outdoor experience all add up to feelings of happiness.?
  3. Spending time out on the water provides unique opportunities to connect with and become immersed in nature. Being surrounded by natural elements like water, sunshine and fresh air, plus the sights and sounds of wildlife, can awaken a new appreciation of our environment. This connection with nature has been shown to most definitely enhance mood and well-being.
  4. Many water-based activities, such as swimming, kayaking or paddleboarding involve plenty of physical exertion. Engaging in exercise releases endorphins, which are the body's natural "feel-good" chemicals. These endorphins can elevate mood, reduce stress and increase general feelings of contentment.
  5. Exploring new places or engaging in marine activities can be both exciting and stimulating. The sense of adventure and novelty associated with these experiences can lighten your overall mood and provide a break from routine, injecting a sense of real delight into your day.
  6. Being part of a boating community cultivates a sense of camaraderie and belonging. Engaging with other boaters, participating in regattas or local events and sharing like-minded experiences can lead to developing new friendships plus access to a vibrant social life.
  7. Being out boating in the sun’s rays allows your body to make vitamin D, and this crucial nutrient has a big role in regulating mood being linked to the production of serotonin. Therefore enjoy sunny days to boost your emotional state:? this powerful catalyst for promoting happiness should not be overlooked.?

It is clear to see that water-based activities not only promote happiness but also serve as a way to instil valuable life skills and a real sense of purpose. This is why the UKSA has focused on removing financial and social barriers in order to offer education, training and opportunities within a supportive marine community. Wholeheartedly inspired by the benefits and wellbeing that boating brings, this is a charity that inspires and supports young people to reshape their lives and build a brighter future.

Overall, embracing a nautical lifestyle offers a unique combination of relaxation, sensory stimulation, physical activity and a close connection with nature. These factors, along with the potential for socialising and the release of mood-enhancing chemicals, contribute to a positive impact on your attitude and well-being. It really is no wonder boat owners look so happy!
