Being on a board of directors can be a significant milestone in one's professional career. It provides an opportunity to contribute to strategic decision-making, networking with influential individuals, and gain valuable experience in governance and leadership. More and more I am asked, how do I join?
Here are some tips and tricks to increase your chances of being a board of directors:
- Enhance Your Qualifications: Every board is constructed of different backgrounds and talents so you have to figure out what yours is and then develop a strong skill set and relevant qualifications that make you a valuable asset to a board. This may include expertise in areas such as finance, strategy, governance, HR, IT, security, legal, marketing, or specific industry knowledge. You can also never go wrong with pursuing certifications, advanced degrees, or executive education programs to demonstrate your commitment to continuous learning and professional development...you also NEVR KNOW who you will meet!
- Gain Experience: Seems simple enough but by building a track record of relevant experience you can showcase your ability to contribute effectively to a board. Seek out opportunities to serve on advisory boards, nonprofit boards, or committees within professional organizations. Volunteering for leadership roles in community organizations or industry associations provide valuable board-related experience...that will eventually lead to paid gigs.
- Expand Your Network: Working is often about who you know so network extensively within your industry and professional circles. Attend conferences, industry events, and networking functions where you can connect with individuals already serving on boards. Engage in conversations, seek mentorship, and don't be shy! Express your interest in board opportunities. Feel free to leverage your existing network to get introductions to board members or influential individuals who can provide recommendations or refer you to potential board positions.
- Join Board-Related Organizations: You can be in one to then join one. Join organizations or associations that focus on board governance and directorship. These groups often provide educational resources, networking opportunities, and board placement services. Engaging with such organizations can help you stay informed about board openings and connect with board search consultants or nominating committees.
- Develop a Strong Personal Brand: If people see you as the expert in your field they will see your value. Creating a compelling personal brand that highlights your unique value proposition as a potential board member. Craft a professional resume or board biography that emphasizes your relevant skills, experiences, and achievements. Develop a strong online presence through platforms like LinkedIn, showcasing your expertise and thought leadership in your field.
- Network with Current Board Members: We are the company we keep so build relationships with current board members and executives. Seek opportunities to engage with them through industry events, conferences, or mutual connections. Actively participate in discussions, demonstrate your knowledge and insights, and express your interest in joining a board. Personal connections and endorsements from existing board members can be invaluable when seeking board positions.
- Engage with Executive Search Firms: Executive search firms often play a crucial role in identifying and placing candidates for board positions. Establish relationships with reputable search firms that specialize in board appointments. Share your board aspirations with them, provide them with your updated resume, and keep them informed about your professional accomplishments and aspirations...this is not a plug, it's just a fact :)

Being well-informed and prepared demonstrates your commitment and readiness to take on board responsibilities.
