Board Service with Purpose

The National Association of Corporate Directors (NACD) is an independent, not-for-profit organization with more than 23,000 members. For more than 40 years, the NACD has been on the leading edge of corporate governance, setting standards of excellence that have elevated board performance*.

I am honored and humbled to have been selected for inclusion in the 2022 NACD Directorship 100?, which each year recognizes the most influential leaders in the boardroom.?

The 2022 NACD Directorship 100? list of honorees -?each of whom has been nominated by a peer - have demonstrated their individual excellence in governance by serving their organizations and communities during the most challenging of times, according to the NACD.?

I want to thank the many people and companies I am fortunate to work with on board assignments. Working with them has been and continues to be a great honor. Board service requires dedication, commitment, and hard work, but it is very rewarding. I was recently asked a very insightful question regarding board service:?

?“What did you do to prepare yourself for board service??

Upon reflection, one of the smartest things I did many years ago was to join the Junior Achievement (JA) Worldwide board (non-profit). JA delivers hands-on, immersive learning in work readiness, financial health, entrepreneurship, sustainability, STEM, and economics to young people around the world.

This board assignment served two purposes. First, it allowed me to follow my passion for helping young people reach their full potential. Second, it allowed me to gain invaluable experience as a director of a worldwide organization with over 300,000 volunteers and over 3,000 staff members in over 100 countries.

I am proud to have served as the Chairman of JA Worldwide for four years. JA Worldwide has been recognized in the top ten Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) globally for the last three years by NGO Magazine. It was also recently nominated for the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize. This recognition is attributable to the great JA Team worldwide and its amazing board of directors.

I highly recommend that people begin their board service by doing so in a non-profit which appeals to their values and purpose. If you do, it will prepare you for board service while making a positive impact in the world.

It is the essence of “Board Service with Purpose.”
