While some know me as Darren from Engage Web , or the guy who used to be the web designer at GAME Digital , most of my following has come about because of the BNI education moment videos I've recorded and uploaded to a YouTube channel.
I have been recording the videos, of talks at BNI meetings, since as far back as 2018. Originally with a mobile phone, no microphone and awful sound (apologies for the early stuff) and now, more recently, with a two-camera set up and Sony radio mics. They've come a long way.
But why? Why have I bothered doing it, and why have I stuck at it for so many years? I don't get paid by BNI. In fact, I wasn't really sure they'd even approve. I mean, I'm using their branding and their name, on my own channel. They could have taken issue with what I'm doing.
So why have I done it?
BNI has a number of core principles, the most famous being Givers Gain (you've probably heard of that one if you've ever attended a meeting) but one of those principles is Recognition. And recognition is something I'm absolutely getting from recording these talks. I've received countless connection requests from BNI members around the world, from as far afield as Australia and New Zealand to the West Coast of the United States. I've been approached by complete strangers at events locally who believe they know me as they've seen my videos, and I've had BNI members tell me how my videos have been played in their own chapter meetings.
I'm receiving the level of exposure I couldn't have experienced any other way, than by creating a YouTube channel of BNI ed slot videos.
Recently, this exposure reached new heights as BNI Global decided to send out an email newsletter to its members (some 300,000 or so worldwide) with the main content being one of my videos on inviting videos. I didn't know it had done this. The first I was aware of anything was when my YouTube subscribers jumped massively overnight, and then the views on a particular video started to shoot up. It wasn't until someone forwarded me the email that I new what had happened - BNI had sent me global.

This all happened after I'd already appeared on the Official BNI Podcast, with Dr Ivan Misner, talking about inviting visitors via social media.
So why do I do it? Yes, I love being in front of a camera. That's pretty evident. Yes I love creating videos. It was a huge part of my degree. Yes, I love public speaking. So everything about the process of creating the videos is something I love to do, but it would be pointless without the goal. Without the exposure. Without the results.
I've managed to leverage BNI to be so much more than just one chapter, even though our Chester BNI is a great chapter. I'm in hundreds and thousands of chapters worldwide, without ever leaving my office. I'm seen globally as an expert in networking, referral marketing and speaking because my videos are shared around the world. I have experienced members, chapter presidents and executive directors messaging me for 121s, all because they've watched what I've said about BNI.
When it comes to credibility within BNI... I couldn't really have done any more.
The video which BNI sent out globally by the way, is this one:
