Hi, welcome to the 8th edition of?The Race to NetZero?Newsletter, a monthly round-up of the best research and news from?BloombergNEF.
Next week is COP27, ahead of it find a selection of public research and articles from the BNEF team.
Introducing the 2023 Pioneers Competition for the world’s best climate-tech innovations
BloombergNEF’s annual Pioneers competition identifies game-changing technologies or innovations with the potential to accelerate global decarbonization. After more than a decade, we have recognized 129 companies as leading innovators in the fight against climate change.
The competition focuses on three specific challenges in the transition to a net-zero world. This year, BNEF is looking for innovations across hydrogen, metals and materials, and food production.
Zero-Emission Vehicles Progress Dashboard
BloombergNEF published an updated ‘dashboard’ tracking the latest progress on zero-emission vehicles adoption, covering key statistics such as vehicle sales, charging infrastructure deployment and oil demand impacts.
The dashboard has been produced for the Zero-Emission Vehicles Transition Council (ZEVTC), in consultation with the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This edition includes data up to and including the first half of 2022.
The Energy Transition Illustrated, for Policymakers
As part of the annual Clean Energy Ministerial meetings held in Pittsburgh this week, BloombergNEF (BNEF) has released an?Energy Transition Factbook?to graphically highlight how the world is progressing toward lower-carbon energy sources.
The 48-page report leverages BNEF’s research on power, transportation and industry, while detailing various investment trends.?It has been released in partnership with the Clean Energy Ministerial and Bloomberg Philanthropies to provide a useful fact set to guide discussions among energy ministers gathering in Pittsburgh.
Global Energy Storage Market to Grow 15-Fold by 2030
Energy storage installations around the world are projected to reach a cumulative 411 gigawatts (or 1,194 gigawatt-hours) by the end of 2030. That is 15 times the 27GW/56GWh of storage that was online at the end of 2021.
BNEF’s?2H 2022?Energy Storage Market Outlook?sees an additional 13% of capacity by 2030 than previously estimated, primarily driven by recent policy developments. This is equal to an extra 46GW/145GWh. The most notable new policies include the US Inflation Reduction Act, a landmark piece of legislation providing more than $369 billion in funding for clean technologies, and the European Union’s REPowerEU plan, which sets ambitious targets to reduce reliance on gas from Russia.

Coal power spikes, but progress on renewables brings hope
The world recorded an unprecedented spike in coal generation in 2021 as countries turned to existing fleets of fossil-fueled power plants to meet fast-growing power demand and keep the lights on amid droughts and higher natural gas prices. However, renewable technologies also had a banner year, both in terms of contributions to global generation and new capacity added.
The Future of European Energy Without Russian Gas in Five Charts
The recent damage to the Nord Stream pipelines is yet another twist in the saga of Europe’s energy crisis. Accusations of sabotage flowing freely between Russia and the West stand in stark contrast to the stunted supply of natural gas.
While neither pipeline is actively transporting gas to the continent, the ruptures add to an increasingly tense stand-off, even within Europe as policymakers mull how precisely to intervene to alleviate the pressures of high gas prices and prepare for a winter without Russian gas.
Here are five charts from BloombergNEF on Europe’s path ahead.
1. No Russia, no problem?
2. Demand destruction is key
3. The long-term plan to ditch Russian gas
4. Renewables ramp-up needs more support
5. High power prices to linger
