Is the BMW IX1, the ''1'' to rule them all?

As an EV enthusiast especially an early adopter of multiple variant BMW I3s when BMW launched the IX1 claiming it to be the successor to the I3 we all gasped. It was simply speculated to be priced too high with none of the unique looks, feel, and above all presence. The i3 was bespoke almost custom built with a unique driving feel and special appeal often making launch days for new EVs to the market difficult to bare for many marketing departments as it became the yardstick for many entering the marketplace and many doe eyed I3 owners to win over.

I've had the pleasure of witnessing the evolution of BMW EVs in the automotive industry firsthand in but the BMW iX1 is a truly impressive bit of packaging with a sporty feel. This sleek and stylish electric SAV not only catches the eye, but it also offers a compelling package of power, range, and affordability that's bound to captivate the discerning South African driver. So, let's embark on a journey through the world of the iX1 and explore what makes it such a remarkable contender.

First and foremost, let's dive into performance—the heartbeat of any exhilarating driving experience. The iX1 doesn't disappoint, boasting an electric motor that generates an impressive 200 kilowatts (kW) and 400 Newton meters (Nm) of torque. These figures translate into a surge of instant power, propelling the iX1 from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 5.6 seconds. This was probably the most fun I had since driving the IX40 heading onto the N1 heading out of Century City towards Bellville. This was a Second faster than the I3s. It's a thrill that will leave you grinning from ear to ear, and it's all made possible by the wonders of electric propulsion and the trick boost paddle behind the steering wheel.

But power is meaningless without control, and the iX1 delivers in that department as well. With precise steering and a well-calibrated suspension, this SUV handles with finesse, effortlessly navigating corners and providing a composed ride. Its agility on winding roads is truly a testament to BMW's engineering prowess, allowing you to indulge in the joy of driving like never before. I must however admit that getting used to the long snout was challenging at first... Pity there's no frunk.

Now, let's turn our attention to the heart of the iX1—the battery. The standard 66.9-kWh battery pack provides a respectable range of approximately 400 kilometers, ensuring that you can tackle your daily commute or embark on weekend getaways without range anxiety.

Charging the iX1 is a breeze too. You can conveniently plug it into a standard 220-volt outlet at home, allowing the battery to replenish overnight. But for those seeking faster charging times, DC fast chargers are the way to go. With a DC fast charger, the iX1 can regain 80% of its charge in approximately 30 minutes, giving you the freedom to hit the road with minimal downtime. It's a convenience that makes electric vehicle ownership a breeze.

Now, let's address the elephant in the room: the price tag. Despite being the cheapest BMW Badged vehicle the iX1 starts at a base price of R 1152,000 and tops out fully spec in the Ix1 30 variant at R1280,000 which may seem slightly higher compared to some of its rivals, such as the Volvo XC40 Recharge and the Mercedes-Benz EQA. However, when you consider the iX1's superior performance, extended range, and the undeniable appeal of the BMW badge, the price becomes justified. You're not just investing in a vehicle; you're investing in an experience that combines luxury, performance, and sustainability.

In the burgeoning South African electric vehicle market, the iX1 is set to make a lasting impression. Its striking design, impressive performance, and attractive pricing make it a compelling choice for South African drivers who refuse to compromise on style or substance. While it will face fierce competition from the likes of the Volvo XC40 Recharge and the Mercedes-Benz EQA, the iX1's combination of power, range, and German engineering prowess make it a force to be reckoned with.

We have yet to drive the C40 recharge with a lower price tag and 100kw more power albeit with less room in the trunk and the Mercedes Benz EQA has been out of stock since launch with the EQB being the only comparative...watch this space...The EV space is getting quite interesting to say the least.
