BMC24: DJs and Neurodivergence Panel

Having no filter in a job where you have a filter button on tap is not lost on me. The wiring encased in my head is more complicated sometimes than that in any DJ booth. But put them together and sometimes the result is a good one. Honest grooves from a sometimes too-honest soul. There are the stereotypes and the traits any neurodivergent DJ will have to deal with – the collecting, the obsession, the hyperfocus, the isolation, each rubbing alongside the sensory overload, rejection sensitivity dysphoria and the social anxiety that accompanies our days and nights. But somehow if you can get past that, these hard-wired differences do work, crafting a career in an industry seemingly atypical but increasingly filled with the neurodivergent.

And when a lighthouse of an ND DJ, writer and journalist called Harold Heath contacts you to tell you he’s getting the ND gang together as Brighton Music Conference leads the way in celebrating neurodivergence in the music industry, you jump. Happy to make a noise (possibly with earplugs), honoured to connect (if without full-on eye contact), chuffed to be part of a much-needed change in the nightlife and electronic music industry. Joining the first ever Neurodivergent & DJing panel alongside the legends that are Bushwacka, Caroline The DJ, Yewande / Ifeoluwa and Brandon Block. Saying it as it is. Probably way too many overthought thoughts at a time. Like we do.
