Bluetooth Low Energy – the digital Swiss knife – part 2

As promised I will write some further lines about BLE applications today. The examples shall give you some ideas what to do with Bluetooth Low energy.

BLE beacon connected to laptop (2)

Bluetooth Low Energy can be used to detect the presence at your laptop on Windows 8. As soon as your BLE key-fob is out of range the screen saver will start. For this application Bluetooth Low Energy offers a profile called Proximity. In theory you could use the iBeacon protocol as well. With Bluetooth Proximity Profile it will be more secure.

And those who want to listen to me about BLE and opportunities are welcome to stay on 5th February at the IoT Meetup in Munich. You will learn about BLE, you can touch and play with inexpensive BLE beacons, and on top you have a chance to win such BLE beacons during the event.

If you can’t make it and run an own IoT Meetup group or Google User group – then do not hesitate to email me at harald.naumann ( at) gsm-modem.de

Out of curiousity, what does BLE reliability and power consumption look like when you have a full open-space office, and each laptop is running Wi-Fi, wireless mouse (proprietary 2.4GHz) and USB 3.0 (notorious for the 2.4GHz interference it generates, cf. Apple's https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203729 or Intel's https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/white-papers/usb3-frequency-interference-paper.pdf)? Hope you do not mind a few screen savers to pop up when you save your spreadsheet or document to your external HDD.
