What is bluetooth ?

A short range wireless technology focused on low power and low-bandwidth applications

Each technology increased its data rates in newer version but in bluetooth data rate dropped from? to 0. Mbps in version 4 (BLE) and then later increased to 2Mbps in version 5

  1. Operates in 2.4GHz ISM Band
  2. Typical range of 10-30 meters
  3. Optimized for low power
  4. Peak current consumption by chip during radio transmission is typically under 15mA

Evolution of BLE

  1. Launched in early 2010(v.4.0)
  2. First smartphone support october 2011-iphone 4s
  3. Support for multiple rols simultaneously
  4. Security upgrade ip connectivity and increased speed 2014(v.4.2)
  5. ?2x speed increase, 4x range increase 2016(v.5)

BLE DEVICE TYPES

  1. Bluetooth Smart: Single mode (BLE only)
  2. Bluetooth Smart Ready: Dual Mode ( BLE and Bluetooth Classic)
  3. Bluetooth: Bluetooth Classic only (BR/EBR)

BLE V/S Bluetooth Classic

BLE:

  1. Low bandwidth applications. (sensor data)
  2. Optimized for low power
  3. Operates over 40 RF channels
  4. Discovery occurs over 3 channels, hence quicker connection


Bluetooth Classic

  1. High bandwidth applications (audio streaming)
  2. Not optimized for low power
  3. Operates over 79 RF channels
  4. Discovery occurs over? 32 channels
