Socio-Technical Architecture?

It is easy to find claims that “IT should closely collaborate with business” — but have you ever wondered, why architects & consultants claim that??

The answer is simple — not because Netflix or Spotify does that — but in fact, how we organize Teams & Communication has a direct link to the system's design, much more than any UML or C4 diagram created by architects! So if your IT is not reflecting business value streams in its team structure, probably this is one of the reasons your company is not flexible in terms of providing new capabilities to the business once you need them. ?

Expert's Voice:?

A boundary between business & IT is, in fact, vanishing. There are really few companies that can live without digitalization. This is a challenge for architects, because we do not only need to understand the technology - but mostly, how the company does business, how it generates value for the Customers - and how to organize IT Teams, so we can reflect the business value streams & domains. Publications like the article about socio-technical architecture - or books like Team Topologies -are helping us with this task, making a Conway Law to work for our benefit. The problem is - it is still a challenge to find & hire architects, who are more aware and focused on the business instead of creating theoretical diagrams, even with these huge lay-offs in IT right now (which impacts developers, but not architects). In BlueSoft we have noticed this challenge many years back - and created a Software Delivery Acceleration - a managed discovery & planning service, focused on detecting areas where business, technology, architecture and teams organization are not aligned - and plan initiatives to fix it within months. We would be honored to have a chance to unlock the true potential of your IT!?

Artificial Intelligence is revolutionizing industries across the board. Discover how AI solutions can be integrated into your organization to enhance decision-making, automate processes, and drive business efficiency.?

Apple’s New AI Frontier: On-Device LLMs and the Future of Mobile AI?

In recent developments, Apple has unveiled its foray into artificial intelligence by announcing that they will integrate OpenAI models into the iPhone, as highlighted in a recent CNET article. This marks a significant milestone, indicating not only the growing importance of AI in consumer technology but also Apple's confidence in the maturity of these technologies. As we delve deeper, it becomes evident that this move by Apple aligns with broader industry trends, particularly in the domain of on-device large language models (LLMs).?

One prominent trend in AI development is the shift towards on-device LLMs. This approach, exemplified by Apple’s new Apple model (3 Billion instructions), showcases a push to run sophisticated AI models directly on mobile devices.

The Apple model aims to rival some of the most powerful models available for personal computing, such as LLama 3, which can also be launched on local infrastructure easily (eg. 8B and 70B models). This transition to on-device AI offers several advantages, including reduced latency in AI responses and enhanced user privacy, as data processing occurs locally rather than being sent to external servers.?

A hybrid approach to AI utilization is emerging, where smaller, efficient on-device models handle real-time tasks while more complex analyses are delegated to larger models hosted in private clouds. This hybrid model not only ensures swift and responsive AI interactions but also maintains the capability to tackle sophisticated tasks that require more substantial computational resources. Moreover, on-device models inherently offer greater security and privacy, as sensitive data remains confined to the user’s device.?

Expert’s voice:?

At BlueSoft, we have been exploring these avenues extensively. Our projects have tested various self-hosted LLMs, ranging from general-purpose models to specialized ones, including recent experiments with Polish embedding models like mmlw-roberta-large. The results are promising. This direction aligns with the overall trend in generative AI development, focusing on creating more efficient, secure, and responsive AI systems.?
In conclusion, the advancements in on-device AI, spearheaded by industry giants like Apple, are paving the way for more integrated, efficient, and secure applications of AI in everyday technology. As we continue to innovate and develop in this space at BlueSoft, it is clear that the future of AI will be increasingly personalized, powerful, and privacy-conscious.?

Dive into the world of Platform Engineering, where we discuss the importance of a solid foundation for IT solutions. Gain insights into designing and building robust, scalable platforms that can drive your business forward.?

Beyond Engineering: The Future of Platforms?

Platform Engineering may seem like a technology-oriented concept around building automation & developer portals - but actually, it's much more a company operating model concept. DevEx & portals are just one way of implementing it — for a DevSecOps area. But it's not reserved only for Software Delivery & Operations — you can also influence business domains with Platform mentality, enabling fast business flow, and building your competitive advantage. Manuel Pais, Team Topologies Author, showcased a way to use Platform concepts within Data, Complaince, Leadership & Legal domains — because Platform is a way to address cognitive load not only for developers!?

Expert’s voice:?

I think the most important calling from Manuel's speech is to treat your coworkers; or other departments as you would treat your customer. I would even add here one more thing: behave like you are a part of a very competitive market! So if you are a DevSecOps Engineer - serve developers in a way, they want to cooperate with you, simplifying technology so they would love to use it in their everyday SDLC. If you are a Data Engineer, simply build an easy-to-use space for your company to share, utilize & analyze business data. If you are an Enterprise Architect — provide simple guidance with clear recommendations, instead of ivory-tower sentences; et cetera. Focus on addressing struggles your platform users are having, instead of polishing nice, well-engineered tools. Any portal you'll create should be your tool to help your Company, a result of your work — not a goal itself. This is the way to be a great Platform Engineer.?

?Embrace the cloud era with insights on cloud migration, security, and the benefits of adopting cloud services. Learn how BlueSoft's cloud solutions can help you stay agile and secure in an ever-changing landscape.?

Empathy-Driven Cloud Transformation?

What does empathy have to do with cloud migrations or adoption journeys? McKinsey interviewed the CIO and the director of the US federal agency that provides health coverage. The key takeaways are as follows:?

  • People-centric approach: trust is foundational in cloud transformations?

  • Empathy as a necessity to understand user needs and thus, deliver effective cloud services.?

  • Center of Excellence evolved into Community of Practice that involved all stakeholders in decision-making.?

  • FinOps by design: following FinOps practices including sustainability from the start.?

Expert’s voice:?

Moving to the cloud isn't just about technology; it's a fundamental change in how the business operates. That is why building an understanding of business needs and trust between IT and business is essential, facilitating better value delivery. Putting yourself in the user’s shoes also requires some empathy, which is a key factor of success. For me, it doesn’t matter how you name the forum, because data-driven decisions influenced by all stakeholders powered by transparency and best practices sharing sessions can lead to absolutely outstanding results, not only in terms of the solution’s effectiveness, but also in cost savings. To ensure a successful transformation, I highly recommend you incorporate the aforementioned practices.?
