Beat the January Blues?
January always feels a bit depressing. The weather is gloomy, payday is far off, and Christmas seems like a lifetime ago. Monday 16th?January is ‘Blue Monday,’ the date by which Christmas is a distant memory, our?resolutions?have fallen by the wayside, and that festive debt is catching up with us. If you’re feeling low, have you thought about hypnotherapy for the January blues?
Why Do I Feel So Sad in the Winter????????????
Of course, there’s no science behind Blue Monday. Many people just genuinely feel low at this time of the year. Seasonal Affective Disorder or?SAD?is a common cause of low mood and lethargy in the autumn and winter months. SAD is a recognised medical condition, and if you notice that your mood and energy change noticeably with the seasons, you should see your GP.?
Even if you don’t suffer from SAD, the darker and colder months can have an impact on your mood, motivation, and mindset. This is where hypnotherapy for the January blues can help, but more on that later.?
There’s Something About Winter?
There are things to love about the autumn and winter like crisp sunny mornings and cosy jumpers. But the fact remains, the cold, dark months have an impact on our brains and bodies which can make us feel out of whack. So apart from seeing your GP (which is a must if you’re feeling really low), what else can help lift your mood, motivation, and energy at this time of the year?
Getting enough sunlight?
Shorter days mean less exposure to sunlight. This lack of sunlight affects the hypothalamus, the part of your brain that produces serotonin and melatonin; hormones that regulate your mood, appetite, and sleep.?
The result is you feel sluggish, low in mood, and hungry. Feel like you need to eat more stodge and sleep more in the winter? That’s why.?
In some Scandinavian countries, the winter months are particularly dark. In fact, one study from the Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy found that in November, there can be as little as 44 hours of sunlight. That’s just over 10 hours per week. The lack of sunlight has been linked to a seasonal increase in suicides in the country.?
There are several ways you can get enough sunlight, even if you work from home. Put your desk near a window, go for a short walk during the day, or invest in a light therapy box.?
Eating well and staying active?
It can be hard to avoid the temptation of all of those fatty, sugary, and stodgy foods when you’re feeling low. But eating a healthy balanced diet of foods that nourish your body will make you feel so much better. So will staying active. Move your body just a little bit each day, even better if you do it outside so you can get some daylight.?

Drinking plenty of water
You might find it hard to drink water when it’s chilly outside. However, water helps keep your brain and body hydrated and energised. Drinking too much caffeine or?alcohol?can impact your mood, stress, and anxiety levels.?
Planning ahead
If you know that you find this time of the year difficult, planning ahead can really help. That might look like cooking and freezing meals when your mood and energy are good so you’ve got something quick and easy to have when you’re feeling low. It might also look like scheduling some relaxing things like curling up with a good book or having a massage.?
