Blood Test Approved to Evaluate Potential Concussions

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first blood test to help doctors evaluate if a suspected brain injury is a concussion. The test, called the Brain Trauma Indicator, measures certain proteins released by the brain within twelve hours of a head injury. When tested on nearly 2,000 blood samples from patients with suspected concussions, it correctly predicted the presence of brain lesions 97.5% of the time. FDA commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb notes, “Today's action supports the FDA's Initiative to Reduce Unnecessary Radiation Exposure from Medical Imaging—an effort to ensure that each patient is getting the right imaging exam, at the right time, with the right radiation dose.” Food and Drug Administration, February 2018
