Blood Culture Pathway Modules

These modules have been developed by NHS colleagues in collaboration with BSAC. They cover the roles played by hospital sectors in optimising the blood culture pathway, leading to quicker and more accurate detection of bloodstream infections and better outcomes for patients.

There are 5 modules:

module for neonates and paediatric staff

module for patient-facing staff

module for laboratory staff

module for consultant microbiologists

module for the multidisciplinary teams

The stages of the pathway

The pathway consists of three stages: pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical.

Each module focuses on that sector's role in optimising the pre-analytical stage. However, key messages are applicable to the other stages and other pathology pathways.?
