Blog Series: Agile Failure Mode #1/12
#1 Lack of Executive Sponsorship
If the transformation does not have the right sponsorship from the top management, then you will have small groups without sustainable success. Sometimes the Executives do their best but did not really adopt the change. But there are two other failures of sponsorship.
Under the radar
If you have a small group of people who started to adopt the agile way, but they are working under the radar, then the impact on the company is minimal. The Executives do not know and are unable to support the transformation to an agile way. A specific project can be a success, but the surrounding departments will slow it down. The agile group will feel like running in an hamster wheel.
Check book commitment
The executives decree a switch to agile across the organisation. But they do not really follow up with the necessary steps to make it real. They stay with the old Matrix, the old responsibility and so on.
How do you prevent the failure to a successful transformation?
The transformation to an agile company is a journey and they need to:
? Seek guidance and input from teams.
? Make a personal commitment to their teams.
? Recognize the personal commitment they’re asking of their employees.
? Commit to measuring success differently.
? Celebrate setbacks as opportunities for growth
