Blog #146: How to keep the magic alive in your company - 3 essentials

When I was a little girl, I just loved the morning on the 6th of December as that was the day that Saint Nicholas passed by our home in the middle of the night. I loved putting my shoe ready, with my handwritten letter in it to tell the Saint how good I had been. No wish list from my side... I loved the letter that I got in return together with some oranges and gingerbread.

Saint Nicholas passed by to visit my children...

To be honest, I kept on doing this as long as I lived at my parent's home... until age 24??... I just loved that magic, and my mother played the game with me and put gingerbread and oranges in my shoe and even wrote me a letter each time.

No fancy toys, no expensive stuff, just the ?? MAGIC ??of the moment.

These days I heard of a company encouraging children to put their wishlist out on the window so that Saint Nicholas can scan their wishes and deliver it to their homes.

No hand-written letters, no magic.

Times are different. Just like when I took my first job back in the '90ies. I was happy I got a job at a secure employer (a bank...) and that was more or less it. These days people have a more concrete wish list. They want a meaningful job in a purpose-driven company. They want a work-life balance, good salary conditions and lovely colleagues.

I believe this is a great thing, as long as the magic does not disappear.

  1. Take care of each other: 'Do you know why people love to work in our organisation?', an impact entrepreneur asked me at an artisanal winter market last Saturday. 'Because we always have somebody in the team who takes care of the wellbeing of the other colleagues. Our people come to work with a smile on their faces.' And indeed Gallup's research confirms that?an engaging manager -- someone who genuinely cares about their team members -- is perhaps the most important driver of an engaging culture.
  2. Get personal: no one size fits all. People are different. People like different things. People have different learning styles, different personalities, different needs, different aspirations, etc. You can only keep the magic if you know what animates your individual team members.
  3. Be true to yourself and to your culture. The other day it was the first time I heard about the concept of mission drift. Companies that used to have a mission, an ideal, a purpose, but when the money kicks in they drift away from the initial mission and they go for the money, the financial gain in detriment of the purpose. Mission drift kills the magic, but the opposite is true as well: a purpose-driven company that lives and breathes that purpose in a genuine way and sticks to it is magical,
