Blockchain: open source, open standards.... or not.

The blockchain is at the peak of the hype cycle. We are getting swamped by start-ups, initiatives, prototypes and more real-life applications everyday. It's hard to distinguish good initiatives from bad ones, companies and governments are looking for some guidance and norms. For starters i would like to propose that any application of blockchain technology for processes within government or that are related with government should use open source and open standards. Governments have special responsibilities with regard to auditability, security, transparancy, democratic and judicial oversight which can never be achieved without this. From a corporate perspective the same arguments could also be made. This means that companies which deliver blockchain solutions should adapt their business models accordingly. I am wondering what the thoughts are about this subject, any strong arguments against my line of reasoning ? Or other perspectives ?

7 年@Illiana, that's a great point! We still have to do fundamental research on the security of blockchain, especially targeting the next (not-so-far) 10-15 years (as I'm biased towards quantum computing). I frankly believe that a good migration plan or at least awareness plan is more than desirable. Quantum computation will make the whole PKI (public key infrastructure) used today totally obsolete (in fact totally broken).

7 年Onlangs heb ik masterclass Blockchain gehad in Tilburg.

7 年Great post, agreed 100%. There's very little formal research in the blockchain / related space, and my concern is that it could lead to an arrested development moment for the industry, or contribute to overinflated hype and potential long lasting implications as governments increasing adopt this technology. In this spirit, I'm actually working on a new social enterprise venture: ColliderX. The goal is to bring together academics, researchers from the open source blockchain / core developer community, and industry (start-ups and corporates) to catalogue open technical questions and to do research (and subsequently publish) technical papers in an open source manner. Happy to chat to see if there's a way for us to collaborate! This is a crowdsourced initiative, in keeping with the core ethos of the blockchain community.

7 年Agreed, particularly for any serious customer to be willing to adopt, a new tech with confidence and compliance requirements.

7 年Open source and open data is not enough to remain competitive long term. Open source still allows for the creation of proprietary systems. To make use of fundamental advantages of blockchain technology information-asymmetry and barriers of entry should be reduced by focusing on open governance as well.
