The Blockchain Healthcare Revolution: Why Hasn't It Happened Yet?
In 2018, I attended an event in Johannesburg hosted by one of the largest information technology companies. The gathering focused on blockchain technology and its potential applications in healthcare. The speaker was a passionate advocate for blockchain, and I was immediately captivated by the possibilities. I left the event convinced that I had witnessed the future of healthcare IT. I imagined a world where interoperability, data accuracy, and cost reduction were no longer significant challenges. Unfortunately, my optimism was premature.
It's 2024, and there's still no significant blockchain adoption in healthcare. Given the promise and potential of this technology, why has it been so slow to take hold? After all, blockchain is the foundation of cryptocurrencies, proving that it's not a theoretical concept. To understand this, we need to start with the fundamentals.
What is blockchain?
Blockchain is described as a decentralized digital ledger that records transactions in a way that makes them difficult or impossible to hack or change. It is a growing list of records, called blocks, that are linked together using cryptography. Each block contains a timestamp and a link to the previous block, creating a chain of blocks.
Some key features of blockchain technology:
Some features of blockchains are very critical to healthcare supply chain. Blockchain technology can be used to track the movement of drugs throughout the supply chain, ensuring their authenticity and preventing counterfeit medications from entering the market. If a recall is necessary, blockchain can quickly identify affected products and notify relevant parties. Additionally, by improving supply chain efficiency, blockchain can help reduce waste and costs associated with expired or unused medications.
Blockchain can also assist in clinical trials. Blockchain technology can facilitate patient recruitment for clinical trials by matching patients with appropriate studies based on their medical history and preferences. It can also ensure the integrity of clinical trial data, reducing the risk of bias and ensuring that research results are reliable. By streamlining the clinical trial process, blockchain can accelerate the development and approval of new treatments and therapies.
The technology can also assist on patient data security and privacy. Blockchain technology can provide immutable records of patient data, ensuring that once data is recorded, it cannot be altered or deleted. This can help prevent unauthorized access and tampering. Patients can also have greater control over their health data, granting them the ability to share it with authorized healthcare providers and researchers on their terms. Additionally, blockchain can help healthcare organizations comply with data regulations by providing a secure and transparent way to store and manage patient data.

Blockchain appears to be a game-changer for healthcare, but why hasn't it gained widespread adoption?
According to experts, the implementation of blockchain technology in healthcare is hindered by several factors, including the complexity of integration, interoperability issues, concerns about data privacy and security, regulatory hurdles, high costs, resistance to change, and the lack of standardized protocols. These challenges have limited the widespread adoption of blockchain in the healthcare industry.
However, there are few medtech companies developing systems based on blockchain. Medicalchain is one example. Medicalchain is described as a decentralized platform designed to securely and efficiently manage and exchange medical data. It aims to address the challenges of fragmented and siloed patient records by providing a single, comprehensive version of each patient's health information.
Patientory is another decentralized platform focused on healthcare data management. It aims to provide a secure and efficient way for patients to store, manage, and share their medical records.
