Blink and you'll miss it
Today education funding is a political issue in the U.K. Brexit has dominated the public discourse for the last 3 years and I will go on record as saying it is the worst disaster to hit the U.K. since Suez BUT this is self-inflicted. But that is not the point.
The point is, maybe , at last politicians have realised they have screwed up. They are too pompous to admit it but they have certainly screwed the education system.
Schools are so broke, they are asking parents to send in loo rolls for the children to use. Rickets, scurvy and scarlet fever are on the rise but this is Britain in the 21 st century. We are supposed to be the fifth richest economy in the world.
The reality is that our children are in school now. In 1976 I took my o'levels. It was the famous long hot summer. At the time teachers said ' don't worry if your grades are down, people will realise you took the exams in the hot weather;'.
In 40+ years no-one has ever said that to me and no-one will say to these children ' oh you were in school in the austerity years'. We still have to educate these children. We are desperately short of educated people yet we are starving schools of resources, this is CRAZY.
Today the education committee published a report and this is not before time. MPs are reported to have said that schools are 'desperately short of cash'.
Dude, we know!
At the time of writing we are due to have a new Prime Minister. His first act should be emergency funding into education, this year!
