Blind hogs and photography!
Many of my photos have hours if not days in preparation time. Rarely, is one of my published photos unplanned. I will find a subject matter and spend hours studying the light given by different times of the day. I will think about how that subject will look in different weather. I will take literally hundreds of photos to study the best angle and lighting. Most of the landscape photos you have seen are very well thought out and planned for. BUT....
My father had more spoonerisms that Carter has liver pills. One of my favorites was: "Even a blind hog can find an acorn now and again." Sometimes dumb luck plays a role. I had a location I wanted in the snow and was rushing toward it so I could catch the right light. This wonderful Paint presented herself in the field and I skidded to the stop. Ain't no way this blind hog was not going to grab this acorn... I did get the shot I planned, but this is the photo that got the attention and published that day. In some ways, I did spend a lot of time preparing for it. I had the perfect equipment in my truck, I was there at the perfect hour and weather which I had studied out. But in reality, sometimes it's just blind luck.
