Friendship is one of the most precious gifts we can have in our lives. A true friend supports, encourages, challenges, and inspires us to be better versions of ourselves. A true friend stands by our side through thick and thin, shares our joys and sorrows, understands us, and accepts us for who we are.
But how do we find such a friend? And how do we nurture such a friendship?
I want to share insights from one of the most remarkable friendships in history: the friendship of Karna and Duryodhana from the epic Mahabharata.
Karna and Duryodhana were two of the main characters in the Mahabharata. They met for the first time at a tournament where Karna challenged Arjuna, the best archer among the Pandavas, to a duel.
Drona, the teacher of Arjuna and Duryodhana, stopped him and asked him to reveal his lineage and kingdom. Karna had no answer, as he did not know his true identity. Duryodhana intervened and declared Karna his friend and the king of Anga, a province under his control.
Duryodhana’s generosity and loyalty touched Karna. He swore to be his friend for life and to fight for him till death.
They had a friendship based on mutual respect, admiration, gratitude, and devotion. They supported each other in their goals and aspirations. They defended each other from their enemies and critics. They shared their secrets and confidences.
Karna was loyal to Duryodhana even when he knew that he was on the wrong side of morality and justice. He followed him in his schemes and plots against the Pandavas, even though he had no personal enmity with them. He sacrificed his happiness and honor for his friend’s sake. He refused to join his biological brothers when he learned that he was a Pandava by birth. He fought against them in the war, knowing that he would die.
Duryodhana valued Karna as his best friend and ally. He trusted him more than anyone else. He consulted him on important matters and sought his advice. He praised him for his skills and courage. He protected him from harm and insult. He honored him with gifts and favors. He mourned for him when he died.
Their friendship teaches us some valuable lessons about friendship:
A true friend can change your life for the better in many ways:
Friendship is a blessing that we should cherish and nurture. A true friend is a rare and precious gift we should appreciate and honor.
A true friend is a life-changer.
