Blank Page Blues

Do you suffer from the blank-page blues?
When you sit down to write content — whether it’s an email, a blog post, a case study or something else — do you freeze up when you’re staring at a blank page?
Even if you have tons of ideas, many times it’s hard to know where to start. And let’s face it: Staring at a blank page can be overwhelming, and it can cause content creators to freeze up.
Opening a blank page and trying to “will” words into existence can make you feel like you’re driving on a winding mountain road with no guardrails.
It’s just wide open space on all sides. Terrifying.

All kinds of creatives — but especially writers — need guardrails if we’re going to work effectively. It’s like bumpers on a bowling lane … these guardrails give us something to push off of, something to keep us centered.
My best suggestion for creating your own guardrails and beating the blank-page blues is to put something on that page, so you’re not facing all that white space.
Go to your research (like a web page, article or book) and copy a sentence from there directly into your blank page. Getting some text on the page naturally creates a simple bumper for you to push off of, and it gets you started with creating your own words.
Hint: When I do this as I’m writing, I change the words and phrases I copy from my research into a separate color text (for me, it’s red) so I make sure never to plagiarize someone else’s content!
