Position Available: Blair seeks an experienced technical director for the 2021-2022 school year; the ideal candidate will be accomplished in set design as well as set building, familiar in working with main-stage and black box theatre productions, musicals and straight plays.
Candidates must enjoy working with adolescents and possess an exceptional work ethic, strong communication skills, a commitment to productive collaboration with colleagues in the performing arts department and a sense of humor. The position includes teaching in an academic department (i.e., math, history or English) as well as residential life and dormitory duties.
In particular, the person in this role will
- fulfill the technical needs for Blair’s yearly departmental performances, including four theatre productions, five music concerts, one to two dance recitals, and several professional performances that take place on campus.
- oversee all aspects of technical theatre at Blair, including set design/building, lighting and sound production for theatre performances. The technical director will be the lead set builder, and will oversee a team of students and assistant technical director in building and running each production. In addition, the technical director will collaborate with lighting and sound designers as needed for each production.
- oversee the group of students each season who will serve as the technical crew for performances. Teach set building skills, instruct students how to run a show and assist with all performing arts events including theatre, music concerts and dance recitals.
- oversee or assist with all-school assemblies that take place in the performing arts building each week, including running sound, lights and AV equipment for School Meetings, Chapels, guest speakers, and yearly events such as Baccalaureate and Convocation.
- assist or oversee the technical needs for some weekend or evening activities that may require portable sound equipment, AV equipment, or take place in our performing arts spaces (main stage, black box theatre, outdoor theatre, gym).
School Setting: Blair Academy is a co-educational, grade 9-postgraduate boarding school situated on 460 hilltop acres just minutes from the Delaware Water Gap and approximately one hour west of New York City. The school is 80 percent boarding, possesses fine facilities and faculty housing, and is committed to the continuing education of the faculty.
