#blackdogsociety

Happened this week... On Monday, I woke up unusually early. I was out of coffee so I visited my favorite coffee shop nearby and tried one of their seasonal lattes. Then I headed to the dog park. But I had to stop in the middle of the road (a wooded, hilly suburban road by a creek, with very few houses); a black dog appeared out of the creek, running right into my lane. In a matter of seconds, the dog was hit by an oncoming car. I created #blackdogsociety to honor the dog, learn about how to lower the risk to accidents like this, and bring awareness about safety on the road for non-motorized travelers.

First, let's pledge to stay fully focused on the wheel, just one way to try and reduce the frequency of such accidents. The #justdrive pledge by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA to fight #distracteddriving on any road is to: Protect lives by never texting or talking on the phone while driving; Be a good passenger and speak out if the driver in my car is distracted; Encourage my friends and family to drive phone-free.

Interesting posts... Jonathan Soormaghen posted about the effect of remote work and less commute on well being.

Your Wellness Tip... Naturally, this edition is all about accident prevention and safety on the road, a topic I've always considered impactful. Pay extra attention in lower visibility conditions (backing up, hills, corners, weather, night time, vegetation and your own possible impaired conditions), and don't pass stopped vehicles before learning why they stopped. Teach your kids and your dog safety while being outside.

Something I learned... trying to learn a lot this week, as 365 Data Science offers open access onto November 11th with basic registration. With 10 days to go, try Data Strategy with Bernard Marr , Data Literacy with Olivier Maugain 莫利伟 , Machine Learning in Python with Iliya Valchanov, Data Cleaning and Preprocessing with pandas with Martin Ganchev and SQL for Data Science Interviews with Tina Huang

Your daily exercise to try this week... Practice your neck range of motion, it is useful for driving, neck strain and sometimes headache relief. Turn your head to each side to gradually reach optimal range at 180 degrees, trying to look over your shoulder. Better to practice laying on your back or sitting/ standing against the wall to sense when you reach full range.

Dogs are awesome... Let's keep them safe???

?? Having your dog off leash carries a risk. There's going to be a road somewhere, and they might get lost. Consider using a longer, hands free leash for more freedom. If a child is holding the leash, show them how to grip it properly

?? Labrador Retrievers, Border Collies, German Shepherds, Cocker?Spaniels and Jack Russells are some of the most likely dogs to run away

?? Other factors are personality, whether a male has been neutered or is intact, if the dog needs to go

?? Check that the collar is secured enough, so they can't get away from it

?? Tag & microchip

?? Carry a whistle/horn

?? Check your fence for holes, or see if they can jump over it or dig holes under it

?? Create and practice an emergency recall word- it would be a special command that the dog doesn't hear on a regular basis, something like "Brisket!" Also, keep a special "emergency" special treat on you

?? Get your dog a reflective vest, collar, leash and harness, possibly with lighting

?? Walk on the sidewalk, the dog on a short leash away from road

?? If your dog is running off don't chase it. Instead sit on the ground and call their name, reward them when they return.

?? Keep the exits in the house safe and put your dog away when keeping the door open. Use more precaution with visitors or if you recently moved

?? Consider a pet barrier/ tracking device

?? Allow the dog to release enough energy and do everything on their walks

...How would you know if these safety measures saved your dog from injury? you wouldn't, that's the beauty of prevention.
