In February 2017 I began producing a short documentary based on the 2011 article by Satoshi Kanazawa ‘Why Are Black Women Less Physically Attractive Than Other Women?’ In the documentary I wanted to breakdown the research Satoshi Kanazawa undertook when writing his article and investigate why black women are constantly being told they are ugly.

To produce the documentary I recruited participants via the casting website ‘Star Now’ and began shooting interviews throughout February and March 2017. For this documentary I wanted to get the opinions of young black women to share their opinion on the article and why the media brands them as unattractive, to create this documentary I felt it was important to get the opinions from the people it effects the most. I interviewed 10 black women from across the UK, from this I was able to get a wide range of opinions and different experiences which help audiences get a better understanding as to why this keeps happening and why it needs to stop.

I wanted to produce this documentary after seeing the treatment of Leslie Jones in 2016. The comedian Leslie Jones was branded as Gorilla in July 2016 when the movie Ghostbusters premiered and was bombarded with racist tweets because the remake of the original 80s film featured an all female cast. Serena Williams, arguably the greatest tennis players of all time, she is called ugly, a monkey and a man. Serena has dark skin, has full lips, a curvaceous and athletic body, her appearance is unapologetically black. But is branded as ugly, why?

Beauty is subjective; someone who I find attractive, someone else might not. To brand an entire race as physically the least attractive confuses me. According to Satoshi Kanazawa’s article the reason why black women are physically the least attractive is because black women have more testosterone. Jourdan Dunn, Leomie Anderson, Gabrielle Union, Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliot and many more prove that his theory is wrong. 

Women of other races are not branded as unattractive but for some reason black women are, even though there are women from other races who have similar attributes or are paying to have big bums or full lips.

In September 2016 I released my doc series 'What Is Good Hair?' and was screened at the Voices of Colour event in November 2016. In November 2016 I premiered the comedy web series ‘Nate & Jamie’ which has been featured on numerous websites including the britishblacklist.co.uk. This spring I released three short documentaries covering cultural appropriation, the stereotype of the angry black woman and on the controversial article by Satoshi Kanazawa that black women are physically the least attractive.
