{Black Woman CEO} What you truly deserve as a Black Woman

“Please take my picture.”

A simple directive I made to my best friend who peered down on me. Holding onto a wall of jagged rocks while standing on a smooth concrete staircase that led up to our private Villa.

Without a thought, she leaned forward into my relevé until my iPhone met her outstretched hand.

To my surprise, she proceeded to direct me as a photography would with a professional model.

Shifting into unfamiliar poses that flattered my now rotund body, I enjoyed the moment away from the main house where she and five other women joined me on a 3-night, 4-day business retreat in the Bahamas.

A location I chose so I would be fed and restored by my two favorites- Sun & Water- as I hosted & facilitated a transformative experience.

Not one to ask others to take my picture, I’ve developed a strong selfie game. This time, I desired to capture the moment- a perfect representation of my efforts to prioritize myself & my self-care.

As a service and mission-oriented person, I often put being of service to others before myself without a second thought.

I’m sure being raised a Black woman aids in that sacrifice.

If you’re anything like me, “strong” women surrounded you- from your grandmother, mother & aunties to your mentors, teachers, and supervisors.

Dr. Sheri Parks in her book Fierce Angels asserts The Strong Black Woman is both nurturing & fierce, and the most celebrated figure in American History.

The Strong Black Woman over serves and over gives. She serves her family, her community, and her religious organization without a thought of herself. And she’s giving to all at her own expense.

The prevalence of diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure amongst Black women are the consequences of this over-service as these are stress-related & preventable conditions.

How does a Black woman change this reality?

Dr. Parks asserts the Fierce Nurturance must now turn towards the self. And I offer, we take it a step further by redefining Strength.

Here are 7 Ways To Regain Your Strength and Step Into a Stronger Black Womanhood:

 1. Strength is Ownership

Take 100% responsibility for your life. Strength is not shrinking. Strength is not silently acquiescing to a life of despair. You are in control of how you react to life circumstances. As a result, you impact the outcomes. Create a life on your terms- a life worth living.

2. Strength is Surrender

Loving yourself is knowing how and when to surrender for your highest good. You can’t be all things to all people. Letting go, forgiveness and being present are all forms of surrender. They put you on the path to a truer self.

3. Strength is Vulnerability

Vulnerability takes fearlessness. Dr. Brené Brown explains, “Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren’t always comfortable, but they’re never weakness.” Vulnerability is shedding the mask. Letting the world see you.

4. Strength is Resourcefulness

Our Black ancestors made the best of limited resources. Today, we have more opportunities and services at our disposal. Black women are no longer limited to the Black Church for community and healing. Modern and alternative medicine, psychotherapy, higher education, and multicultural environments offer a range of possibilities for growth.

5. Strength is Identity

The Strong Black Woman saved us from a real threat. Now, you can redefine her without disowning her. Know who you are. Know what you stand for. Know where you came from. Know who you “be”. You don’t have to be twice as good to succeed. Navigating different environments while maintaining your core is a skill. Authenticity grounds.

6. Strength is Womanhood

Black Women matter. We exist. We have needs. Equality is not achieving maleness. Womanhood is a social construct- its meaning varies from woman to woman. Aspects of who you are rooted in feminine energy. Celebrate those aspects of your identity.

7. Strength is Legacy

Strength is building up the next generation. Providing them with the skills and the resources you acquired. This is an advantage. This is how we move beyond a heritage of survival.

Be a Stronger Black Woman!

Embrace your imperfection and prioritize self-love. Radically accept that you cannot help anyone else until you help and heal yourself.

YOU DESERVE YOU AT YOUR BEST.

Peace & Love from the Bahamas!
