Black / White, Color, and Life

We learnt silver halide photography in our college during late 1980s. We had enough black-and-white photography practices in the hostels. We got access to color photography much later. Color photographic processing was difficult. Slight changes in the processing chemicals would result drastic changes in color reproduction.
The other day I found an AI research group reproduced color tones to a two-minute clip of the movie "Pather Panchali" by world famous film director Satyajit Ray. I won't discriminate the original black-and-white version of "Pather Panchali" because of "no color". Rather I will always prefer to watch the original black-and-white movie. We are naturally good as the mother nature has made us.
Question of color arose when I applied for professional society membership
I first encountered the question of color of skin in 1990 while applying for membership of an international professional society namely the Optical Society of America. There was an item in the membership form that asked about the color of skin (black/white /colored). I asked one of my professors for a suitable answer for this question. He had advised to keep the item blank. I sent the membership form and the requisite bank draft but without filling any answer tick to this question. Afterwards the Optical Society of America removed that question from the membership format.
Question of religion arose when I applied for a job
Long ago there used to be an item "Religion" in the job formats in our country. It is an irrelevant information for a professional career. But we Indians needed to enter that for many years. Fortunately that type of questions are removed since many years. Religion, race or caste are something we (humans) created for discriminating / uniting people for different purposes which are mostly not necessary for living.
Life is more important than religion, race, color and ethnicity
Life is a gift by one or many super creators of the universe. We know that life is more important than our color, religion, ethnicity and race. We have not seen the super creator(s) but we can feel the creation day and night. We can learn why "the sky is so blue". We can learn why some roses are red and some are white. We can enjoy watching the colorful wings of the butterflies. We can enjoy the diverse cultures around the globe.
Unleash the power of Internet and social media to celebrate unity and friendship
This is a harsh time due to COVID-19 pandemic when we need to be united. People beyond countries and borders should only think positive. All negativity must be avoided. We must keep our cool. Utilize the resources to improve self care and cleanliness, and strengthen immunity. The political powers must keep a balance between thoughts and action. Unleash the power of Internet and social media to celebrate unity and friendship.
For humanity's sake, please join hands to defeat all kinds of racism
Discriminating humans is racism. Discriminating by skin color is racism; discriminating by language is racism; discriminating by country is racism; discriminating by religion is racism; discriminating by ethnicity is racism; discriminating by gender and age is racism; discriminating by wealth is racism ... Please stop all sorts of racism.

4 年Whilst a number of the examples are not technically racism, they are however bigotry of which racism is but one type. Otherwise I agree with the basic premise. Look around the internet these days and we often find those who tend to be bigots are often ignorant regarding some very fundamental things about human nature :(

4 年In a recent tweet Bryan Lunduke shared this: https://twitter.com/BryanLunduke/status/1275991217054969857 "My daughter's school told parents we should read "White Fragility" and talk to our kids about it. This is asking parents to tell their kids how all white people are bad. This is over-the-top racist. It is pure evil. My daughter will be changing schools for next year". I think Bryan Lunduke is right. What is your opinion Deb ?

4 年I remember an incident that took place in a lonely lane in Kolkata (Calcutta) in the 1990s. Three street dogs were reportedly found taking care of a new born human baby nicely placed in a somewhat dirty piece of cloth. The humans (mother and / or the father) had discarded the unwanted baby on the street during the late night hours. The street dogs had the "wisdom" that a new born must be taken care of irrespective of its "race" - animal or human. But the human parents had been cruel enough to discard a new born baby. #humanity #animals #kindnessmatters Wish to get your views here Deb Helfrich

4 年Racists are bringing a very serious present-day threat; that is, helping spread Covid-19 by refusing to wear face masks and keep distances. Even where they do not get sick themselves, the asymptomatic racists spread the virus towards good people. I assume that racists hate wearing masks and keeping distances because they hate whatever scientists tell them as scientific. They hate scientists and anything scientific because science supports Darwin's Evolution which completely destroys Creationism, the fantasied foundation of white supremacy and misogyny. In this era of science, it seems that we have to cope with those persistent science-haters.
