Black Wall Street
Black Wallstreet is believed to have been started by Ottowa W. Gurley in 1906. He was a wealthy landowner. He is also known as one of the wealthiest in Tulsa Oklahoma at the time. Black Wallstreet is the Greenwood District in Tulsa Oklahoma. It was one of the most wealthiest places in America at the time. There were people who were jealous of them. There was a railroad track that separated the black population of Black Wallstreet from the white population. Black Wall Street had their own businesses from salons, hospitals, school system, lawyers, doctors, etc. Other people to note is A.J. Smitherman and J.B. Stradford. J.B. Stradford was a lawyer who built an humongous hotel named after him. A.J. Smitherman was somebody that founded the Tulsa Star, which is a black newspaper on Black Wall Street. They did something that we don’t do today but should, which is made sure every dollar would change hands 19 times before it left the community (Powers, 2020).
