Maggie Lena Walker – (1864–1934)

In 1903, Maggie Lena Walker saw the need for a banking institution in her community. She established St. Luke Penny Savings Bank, providing Black communities with financial empowerment.

First Black-Owned Billion-Dollar Business

Reginald F. Lewis (1942–1993)

Reginald F. Lewis was the first African American to build a billion-dollar business (TLC Beatrice International). His success in mergers and acquisitions paved the way for Black entrepreneurs in finance.

Lesson for ISVs: Just as Lewis changed the business landscape, ISVs drive innovation by developing software that expands payment capabilities. Your creativity and vision shape the industry’s future.

Thasunda Brown Duckett (b. 1973)

One of the most influential Black women in finance, Duckett has led major institutions like TIAA and Chase Consumer Banking while advocating for financial literacy.

Kevin Cohee (b. 1957)

As ?CEO of OneUnited Bank, the largest Black-owned bank in the U.S., Kevin Cohee has dedicated his career to closing the racial wealth gap and fostering economic empowerment.
