Black Mirror Vs Tech
Black Mirror, while a fictional show, raises interesting questions about the potential dangers of certain technologies in the real world and in today's rapidly advancing technological landscape, it's not hard to imagine some of the scenarios depicted in Black Mirror becoming a reality.
From the spread of fake news to social media platforms having the power to shape public opinion and influencing our behaviour, but one area where Black Mirror's technology could potentially manifest in the real world is in surveillance and privacy. The show often portrays a world where individuals are constantly monitored, and their every move is tracked and while this level of surveillance may seem far-fetched, there is already technology in place that allows for extensive data collection and tracking. From facial recognition software to location tracking on smartphones our privacy is already being compromised to some extent.
Another theme explored is the impact of social media on our lives, the show often shows a world where people are obsessed with their online presence and are constantly seeking validation through likes and followers. While this may seem exaggerated, it's no secret that social media has a profound impact on future generation and feeling that validation.

One of the most chilling aspects is the idea of technology controlling our lives. The AI-replica of a deceased love one in ‘Be Right Back’ to advanced robotic systems seen in ‘Metalhead’, the show presents a world where humans are increasingly dependent on machines. While we may not be at that level of dependence just yet, it's clear that technology is playing an increasingly prominent role in our daily lives. From smart homes to wearable devices, we are already integrating technology into every aspect of our lives.
Black Mirror presents a very dystopian future when it comes to technology. While it comes from a place of artistic licence they choose to ignore the positive aspects, of which there are many. Here at Enlighten we are proud to be seen as a ‘tech for good’ company! It can be used to support mental health conditions, medical emergencies, the treatment of chronic illnesses and even in the classroom to support learning. This is just a few examples of the flip side to Black Mirror, it doesn’t always have to be a ‘1984’ or ‘The Terminator’ sometimes it can just be ‘Star Trek’ and invent a new communication device.
Black Mirror raises important questions from surveillance and privacy concerns to the impact of social media and the increasing role of technology in our lives, the show serves as a cautionary tale about the potential pitfalls of advancing technology but we should never forget the good that it can accomplish as well. So as we continue to embrace new technologies, it's important to consider the ethical and societal implications they may have, only by doing so can we ensure that we navigate the future in a responsible and thoughtful manner.
