Following in the tradition where Rod Serling use fantasy elements to address social issues in The Twilight Zone, Charlie Brooker has done the same with Black Mirror which examines the dark underpinnings that technology has on society. Practical and digital elements were utilized to create the crawl through the mirror sequence in the interactive episode Bandersnatch reveals VFX producer Russell McLean.
There were two mirrored sets, so David Slade had the freedom to put the camera anywhere. There are some shots where the back of my head is dressed in the same costume as Stefan Butler [Fionn Whitehead] while he’s taking the pills. For the crawl-through, two witness cameras were jammed-synced to shoot the reflection pass. Then we scanned Stefan and projected the reflection passes onto the geometry.
