In June 1969, almost 51 years ago the Stonewall Riots took place. Imagine how different the world would be if this hadn't have happened.
Whilst still a long way from equality, LGBTQ+ is talked about openly, (although still contentious in many places) it is addressed in the workplace and in our schools, in order to educate our children. From what I've heard and read, there is a distinct lack of reference to racism and equality for ALL in main stream curriculums (and a distinct lack of black authors, poets etc.) Is this because those at the top who set the agenda think this is no longer an issue or relevant ... that this issue has been 'dealt with' and put to bed? We learn about the kings and queens, civil and world wars, different religions etc. But what is staring us in the face every day seems not to be addressed and has resulted in what is taking place right now across the world in so called 'advanced and developed' countries.
Black Lives Matter.
It's disgusting and heartbreaking that people across the globe need to march, protest and riot to fight for anyone's fundamental rights in society. Nobody deserves to be treated differently. Why in the 21st Century are we having to resort to this? Your friend, your neighbour, your colleague or class mate no matter their creed, colour, religion, sexuality, physical or mental health should be perceived as any more or less entitled to anything.
As first world, supposedly advanced countries we should be focusing on influencing and changing attitudes and laws across other countries which are in the dark age when it comes to equality for all. Instead people have been forced to take to the streets, media and social media to change the narrative and influence attitudes and behaviours to fight for Black Lives Matter.
To all those saying 'but all lives matter' ...yes they do. But not until the world has acknowledged that black lives matter as much as any other life.
