At the end of October 2021, I want to reflect on Black History Month in the UK. The theme is, Proud to be, is the perfect opportunity to highlight a few Black people in the UK, who have changed the lives of unknown numbers of people around the world.??

?Isaac Borquaye, Guvna B – Rapper, Author and Philiphrapist

Isaac Borquaye, also known by the name Guvna B grew up in East London. His career started when he released his album,?The Narrow Road. Following the release and success of his album, Guvna B has become a two-time MOBO award-winning rapper. Known as a ‘clean’ rapper Guvna B has worked with many well known singers and continues to focus on spreading messages of hope and positivity.?‘there is probably something you have that is unique to your story, that is authentic to you. Don’t hide it embrace it.’ Guvna B

He is married with a son and wanted his second book to help young men struggling with the pressures and expectations, they have to deal with as they grow up.?Unspoken: Toxic Masculinity?and How I Faced the Man Within the Man?is a close and personal story about how Guvna B struggles with the death of his father and the challenges of growing up.?'After the loss of my father, I realised that I wasn’t as well put together as I thought. I want to help other young men struggling to process their emotions.’ Guvna B ‘ His desire to make a difference has also led Guvna B to launch?ALLO MATE,???a charity that supports young musicians with a merchandise line.?

Bro Cecil Gutzmore – Historian and community activist

Bro Cecil Gutzmore is a veteran community activist and historian. Speaking about racism and how it impacts the police, the Sewell Commission report, and the role of Cressida Dick, a Metropolitan Police Commissioner, in his recent public, critical analysis,?Racism, Crime And Policing In The Johnson-(Cummings)-Sewell/Dick Moment!

Damion Burrows - Architect

Manchester Damion Burrows started out as a bartender. After attending Manchester Metropolitan University, Damion has launched his company, Damion Marcus Burrows Architects. He is committed to ‘actively increasing diversity within the profession’ and has also appeared on TV in many property programmes including Grand Designs and Your Home Made Perfect.

Garrett Morgan - Inventor

Garrett Morgan did not get a chance to have a higher education, despite this he invented a number of things, including the Three-Light Traffic Signal. His invention that undoubtedly saved thousands of people is the Gas Mask. Largely unknown this inventor deserves to be known by everyone.

The Harder They Fall Film Review

Headlined the BFI London Film Festival on the 6th of October. An alternative cowboy movie that is focused on the black community is based on real-life characters and features strong women and the difficulties faced by Black parents. Located in the American West this film doesn’t shy away from showing harsh realities and draws on common messages that have translated through to the Black movements, such as Black Lives Matter.?This narrative for black people is accompanied by a moving soundtrack and is both shocking and inspiring. A film that’s worth your time, this is going to be award-winning.

?How to continue to support the aims of Black History Month

The idea of Black History Month is to inspire everyone to continue to be aware of the contributions Black people have made around the world. Now it is up to everyone to continue to push for true equality for all underrepresented groups. Here are 6 things you can easily do to support diversity and equality for all.

  1. Pay attention to any new laws that restrict our right to protest peacefully in large groups
  2. Join in the fight for LGBTQ+ equality
  3. Keep up to date with employment law
  4. Share stories of Black people who have done remarkable things??
  5. Find out what Black people have invented
  6. Read and review books by black authors
