This Black History Month, Learn More about the Black Experience in America

Monument Chemical is proud to commemorate Black History Month!

The roots of this commemoration go all the way back to 1915, when a Harvard-trained historian teamed up with a prominent minister to create an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by Black Americans. A straight line can be traced from their work to 1976, when President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month. Let’s take advantage of the opportunity we have this month to learn more about the Black experience in America. Here are five ways we can do that.

Pay a virtual visit to the U.S. National Archives

The National Archives puts comprehensive documentation of Black history right at your fingertips in the form of records, photographs, blogs, articles, and much more. (Of course, the next time you are in D.C., you can visit the Archives in person!)

Watch a documentary

A great documentary can be more riveting than the best feature film — as well as educational. Here are ten Black history documentaries to consider viewing. Some of these films take on the entirety of the Black experience in this country, while others focus on topics like the Freedom Riders and the integration of college football.

Check out Google Arts and Culture

The Google Cultural Institute: Black History and Culture is a collection of more than 4,000 online primary sources, including documents, photographs, and more – including more than 230 stories from 82 museums, galleries, and cultural institutions.
