Blue Zoo Animation Studio
B Corp-certified BAFTA-Winning Character Animation Studio
Throughout Black History Month, we’re sharing creatives in the studio that inspire us on a daily basis.?
Introducing you to the lovely Nathan Wilkes , a Lead Creative Producer, in the studio. Here, he talks you through his job role and tells you the one piece of advice he wants everyone to know.?
Tell us a bit about yourself and your job role...
My name's Nathan and I'm the lead creative producer for the BZ Digital department where I create new content for our Blue Zoo owned-IP as well working on the development of new digital first IP. I work primarily across digital platforms such as AVOD platforms like YouTube, apps and social media as well as collaborating with the licensing team in the creation of new assets for product and brand campaigns.
What inspires you??
Inspiration for me is deeply personal and rooted in authenticity. I'm really driven and inspired to create content that reflects the upbringing I grew up with and saw around me in a way that is genuinely authentic and makes a difference. Through my time in the industry, I've seen very few people who look like me in senior management positions or responsible for the development of ideas and I want to bring my voice and my experiences to showcase a side that people often don't get to see. I find inspiration in the voices in the industry that do reflect my experience and bring them to the screen in genuine positive ways. On the big screen like the Spider-verse film series to TV series like Jojo and Gran Gran where even small details in the environment design feel comforting and reflective of where I grew up.

What does your job entail??
I'm incredibly lucky to work on a total mix of projects from motion graphics to CG animation to live-action to occasionally stop motion and each project comes with its own different challenges to sort. Currently, I'm working across a mixture of projects, primarily related to our Numberblocks brand as well as also working on content around new digital first IP and our amazing MoPo tool. On top of that, I'm really fortunate to work with a brilliant mix of talented people who create amazing work day in, day out!
What's one piece of advice you want people to know??
If you don't hear your voice or your experiences being represented in the room, it's not because they're not valuable or wanted, it's because they're special and unique to you and if anything, that should be the very reason you share it rather than a reason to stay quiet.
Thanks to Nathan for opening up and sharing his experience at the studio!?
