My mother Grace Hampton Modlin (1924-2003) is one of my Black History Month (and all year long) Heroes. My sister Deborah Edmunds briefly summarized just some of her amazing accomplishments and contributions to society:
“She was the first Black teacher in Henry County Indiana, graduating from Ball State University with a Master’s of Elementary Education degree while raising 5 children. She was a Brownie Leader, supporter of the downtrodden (taking in children from neighborhoods in Chicago, IL raised in poverty to live with us in our very small and modest home several summers while we were children).
She was a mother, wife, sister, aunt and proud citizen of her community and of the world. She was also a healthy voice and brave role model during the civil rights movement, which gave my siblings and I a voice to accomplish many things.”
What school did she teach at? I'm from New Castle/Millville
